Potty training

Mumsnet wisdom please - is my DS ready?

Have already posted up, but wanted to ask a more generic question really on others experiences.

DS is 2.10 and he's been in pants since Saturday, so we are now on day 3.

We started 'training' cos he was weeing when we asked him to in his nappy.

We've been putting him on potty every 30 minutes and he is weeing in it most times, great. He's pooed in it twice and pooed once in his pants.

BUT, he also 'dribbles' a lot in between. When this happens, I put him straight on potty and he has another wee. It feels like he knows what potty is for and can wee when asked, but just isn't 'holding it in' enough.

He isn't asking to be put on potty. He's not always that co-operative to go on and we're reverting to chocolate buttons / star charts to get him on. He also doesn't like staying on it past a few seconds too (we are counting, getting thomas to do a lap of his track etc etc to try to get him to stay on longer).

I know we're only on day 3, but I guess I feel like there's been a lot of progress, but I also have this nagging thought - is he ready?

Am I expecting too much too quickly or is he genuinely not ready?

Thanks for reading.

This was me last night (although I think we were having more accidents tbh)!

We are on Day 4 now and DH has just emailed me to say no accidents so far this morning, no dribbles and going for 1-1.5 hours between wees. Not sure what the rest of the day will bring of course!

I'm still undecided about what to do and not entirely sure if he is ready (he is 2 in a few weeks) but I think I'm going to wait a couple more days.

I was following the gina ford potty training in one week and last night remembered that i had also bought the Elizabeth Pantley No Cry Potty Training Solution. There is a good questionnaire in there that you can use to determine readiness - it suggested my DS is nearly, but not quite ready.

thankyou for posting.
so was your ds also having lots of dribbles? 1-1.5 hours between wees is great. how long was he going before? we're managing about 20-25 minutes before he dribbles, then i put him on potty.
i guess i was expecting loads of accidents, but i hadn't anticipated the frequency with which he goes. i'm trying to work out if the reducing frequency / holding it in comes before or as a result of potty training, if that makes sense?
it's so difficult to know if ready isn't it?

We had lots of dribbles - I was seeing it as a good sign on day 2 because on day 1 we just had gushes!

For days 1-3 he was going about 14 times per day which seemed like a huge amount but I guess he was just letting it out as in when as he would in a nappy. Initially it was every 20-30 minutes but then seemed to gradually increase but lapse in the morning (forgetting overnight?) and evening (tiredness?).

Today he used the potty successfully 9 times (although a small wet patch on the pants one of these times) and then had one accident just before bed time. He also seems to be much happier about using pants and asked for a specific pair whereas previously he has tried to persuade us to put a nappy on him and dropped his pants into the laundray basket!

We're hoping all this means things are starting to fall into place but we will see what tomorrow brings!

Aww, that's fab news mini! Good you're seeing him lengthening out his wees. DS1 is at CMs today. I spoke with her last night and she said the same - the dribbles are all part of training, he has to learn to hold on.

I feel like I am going to reward dry pants, rather than wee-ing in potty (which he does).

Thanks for posting - here's to another good day!

Thanks Smile. How did your DS get on today?

Mine had a near accident at the CMs so wet pants but managed to get most of it in the potty and the rest of the day went pretty smoothly. Only 6 wees today - a vast improvement on 14!

Hiya mini. It's great you're seeing progress day on day, that must be so motivating!

Wasn't the best day, as DS1 had the runs (he was at CMs all day), so that kind of took the focus away a little. (Feeling a tad guilty it may have been overeating of chocolate buttons as rewards over the weekend!)

He had 2 accidents between 9 and 3 and 2 accidents between picking him up and bedtime. BUT, I'm not sure if the CM was counting the 'dribbles' as accidents.

My feeling is that he has had fewer dribbles today and they are getting smaller. BUT, it might have been cos he was dehydrated with the runs. Am going to see how we get on tomorrow. I think things are improving. BUT, he still doesn't know when his pants are damp and he isn't asking to go wee/poo/be put on potty.

Was bit funny this morning, he stood up too quickly from the potty, cue big poo on the floor! Luckily, we have hard wood floor, not carpets Grin

Tomorrow is a new day ...

Aah, must be hard for DS1 if he had the runs, sounds like he is doing really well even so. We also have wooden floors which has kept me slightly more sane in this process!

Further improvement here today so I'm feeling really positive now. DS lasted 3.5 hours without a wee this morning and has had no accidents so far today. He did have a tiny dribble at 8 and then slightly damp pants at 12:30 but I'm more than happy with that.

I spoke to the CM about the asking to go thing and she thinks to keep reminding him until the weekend and she thinks he might be ready to start asking after that.

Hope you are having a good day too.
