Excellent. Oli, really really sympathise with you about ds1, my ds1 was exactly the same for months on end, he only does it occasionally now thank goodness. Possessed is good way to describe it! I often did not see them coming, but it would take up to an hour to calm him down, I've strapped him into the pushchair more than once to control him & have been rough at times. I did get a book about child dev that really helped to explain why they got so angry, I'll try and look it up for you, it made me feel better! Ono things I found to help were to try and have more routine, never let him get hungry or too tired if poss (although completely impossible at times) and actually dp and I found we needed to really crack down on discipline at other times so he knew where he stood. The more tantrums, the tougher we got and it seemed to work, but frankly some kids just do it, none of his friends ever got that bad. As he's 3 (ds was 2 when it was bad) you might be able to discuss ways with him to 'manage' his anger when he gets like that - once over the tantrum of course!!! I know how unsettling and upsetting they are, ds hasn't had one for a while but I was often in tears about them [hugs]

AQ, the title of that book would be great at some point. They are definitely linked to tiredness - he's never coped well with being tired and he seems to be suffering from the terrible 3's, he wasn't too bad at 2! I am wondering whether he's picking up on my and dh's stress too. Dh has just had OFSTED at work, the house move is a nightmare, we're both knackered from ds2's night time shenanigans and he's not gettiing nearly enough positive attention. I just hope when we're in the new house with more space, a better garden, lots of places to go and play and fewer sessions at preschool he might settle back down again. ?Roll on Weds!

Hi Lucy!

I find I can cope a lot detter with dd1s tantrums once I have had a day away from it.

She has stayed around my mums a few days this week and it helps me not to get stuck in a rut of arguing with her

Oli my dd was worse at 3 than 2. I think terrible twos is a bit of a con! I think you also over analyse when you are tired or stressed.

glassslipper · 28/04/2007 11:08

My DD didnt have terrible two's but now she is three she is pretty stroppy. It is often linked to tiredness or hunger so she has so many snackes it is unreal and we try and keep her routine as consistent as possible. It is the whining that 'pushes my button' - i cant bear it.

Dd4 is definately worse at 3 then she was at 2!! In fact I'm worried she will be even worse at 4

Well had a pretty boring week trying to sort finances out, got there in the end though so back to normal.
Off out tonight, it's Elvis at the local social club my parents go to so I promised I would go with my mum as it was her birthday this week. Dh is dreading it as ds1 still not happy with a bottle. But now have the NUK teats to try.

Dd4 staying at MIL as she will make it even harder for dh

The twins have a drama workshop today and dd1 is going to cinema so poor dh is a taxi for the day.

3 days in a row ds1 has slept 9/10pm till 3.30am then till 6.30am Long may it last!!! This has happened at the same time as going from 1 to 2 solid meals a day. Hungry boy me things

Well done Margo

Oli, commiserations - threenager dd definitely harder work than at two. And she picks up o our tiredness and stress for sure: this morning she drew a picture of the family and Mummy and Daddy had rather grumpy faces .

I happened on a great thread (entitled THREENAGERS) on the Behaviour section this morning, no good at links but it should be easy enough to find. Someone resurrected it now that their then-threenagers is an adorable six, and their adorable 10 month old is an unspeakable threenager. I haven't yet had time to go back to old thread, so not read your OP on subject, but Issymum had some feedback on that threenager thread that I loved - worth checking out!

dd's nose slightly better in night...still ended up in our bed at 4am, propped up on pillows, though. One problem is, she throws up or isn't hungry in the evening - opposite of tanking up - same hours she used to have screaming colic/reflux in. Sleeps from 7.30ish till midnight ish (with or without dream feed) then is hungry, and again at 2.30 dh is going to try a bigger feed at midnight (his shift) to see if that helps - either will, won't, or will cause a major puke incident

Hello all ..

Oli - hope yr ds settles down soon , with my dd1 her tantrums were usually down to tiredness,so whenever she got stroppy we tell to lie down on the sofa to have a wee nap . Maybe when u move , your ds will be excited and be less stroppy hopefully !

LFM -Sorry to hear your ENT appt was disappointing- must be frustrating - shows how crap the NHS is !

Magnolia - I've been having the same trouble with my ds re getting him on the bottle and just tried the NUK teats, today for the 1st time he drank the whole bottle !!, so I
am going to stick to it and not let him have my breast so will feed him EBM & wean him onto formula. Gonna be hard to resist from giving him my breast but im rtning to work in July so must start now!

Glassslipper = glad to hear you had a lovely time - dd1 sounds cute with her ladybird face ! Reminds of when my dd1 had her face painted like a tiger and insisted on me communicating with her in tiger sounds!

Hello ladies, I am a serial lurker on this thread and have found all your advice invaluable. I forget what ages all your LOs are but my DS seems to get round most of the issues.
Today though, he woke up red all over, not a rash as such just flushed. Doesn't have a temperature and is eating as much as usual but still worried. Tried NHS24 but they said just to wait a few days to see if it clears by itself. Any suggestions? Started him on solids this week and he had apple puree and a bit of banana yesterday, maybe a connection? any suggestions to put mind at rest appreciated! thanks!!!!!!!!

Gloria - maybe its heat rash ? weather has warmed upabit . My DS has rash on his chin/cheeks but thats down to he dribbles so much over it that caused it .

Hello, Gloria! Nice to see you again. Have no advice at all I'm afraid though. If he's fine in himself you're probably okay to wait until Monday and see the gp if you're still worried.

Eli, thanks for that thread, have skim read it and Issymum talks a lot of sense!

Gloria42 · 28/04/2007 15:56

Thanks for your thoghts, it started off as dribble-rash on face, but whole torso is flushed-ish.
DP thinks am overreacting - he's probably right!

Gloria, trust your instincts and not NHS direct as IME they always tell you to wait and see your doctor! As long as he doesn't have a temperature, not throwing up etc and seems 'ok in himself' then I wouldn't worry too much.

Oli, DD1 had major 'terrible twos'. She still has the odd tantrum but they are shorter and always related to tiredness. She sleeps badly at the moment and they are worse than usual. DS was a 'threenager' though he never really had tantrums just a bit 'stroppier'. IME boys are more prone to the terrible 3s than 2s. You have to sit it out IMO, they should grow out of it Having said that my DSIL has just had her 40th and still has them ...

I gave DD2 some pear today and she's been in a foul mood ever since! She's so clingy, wants to be stared and talked to the whole time. Is everyone else's LO like this or is it just mine??

Report
lucy5 · 28/04/2007 16:54

Agree with trust your instincts. Could it be teething? ds is red and blotchy at the moment most deffo teeth.

glassslipper · 28/04/2007 17:43

gloria, as long as ok in himself try not to worry,

gave dd2 some carrot today and she loved it. do your LOs stick their thumb in their mouth to scoop the food in? mine then sucks her thumb to get the food down her throat. DD1 did the same but sont know if it is just mine...

gloria, nice to see you back I don't recall apple or banana as allergy foods, but you could look it up I suppose to put your mind at ease. I seem to remember my dad saying if they were going to react, they wouldn't to a teaspoon here or there (he's a pediatrician) which made me feel better. I was fairly sure strawberries or citrus are the problem fruits.

castles, surely pear couldn't make a baby bad tempered, just co-incidence maybe Oli you haven't given ds1 any pear lately have you? I joke, but having just thought ds1 had passed the possessed tantrum stage lo and behold 3 mammoth ones in a row. You know, where they get calmed down for...oooh, 30 seconds or so, you relax and then they hit you again! He sensibly decided to send himself off for a nap (with no lunch!) after tantrum no.3, who were we to disagree. Came down 2 hours later saying he'd enjoyed his quick nap & couldn't be persuaded otherwise. If only the terrible 2's had been like that (he really was, 3's been remarkably easy by comparison).

Yet another 2 hour get the baby to bed session, I'm really tiring of this. I can just see my evening ticking away, by the time I come down & do essential chores, I get 30 mins to myself. Grrrrrr.

Will read and catch up and post properly tomorrow. Today I have been a very good non procrastinating and non MNing student and I've just mailed off a little over 3000 words of babble on the language acquisition of deaf children to be checked over by my tutor before it gets handed in for real. Now I'm off to find some food before I dream feed ds and hope for another night like the one before last, not like last night, please whatever deity is out there not like last night!

I can remember reading a good few years back that pear is one of the few things that doesn't trigger food intolerances. Don't hold me to that, it was 5+ years ago

Did I say in the last thread that dd2 doesn't have a blocked tear duct anymore? Apologies for possible repetition but it's so nice to see that her eye isn't weeping anymore.

dd1 called me a "Dirty Frog" yesterday. I am puzzled, who taught her to say that?

I'm not even going to bother describing my night, let's just say it wasn't the best!

I'm desperately trying to get the house ready for the movers on Tues but it's really not happening, especially as ds1 and dd keep 'helping' in their own special way .

Gah, can't wait to move, maybe then I won't be such a self obsessed whinger!

Roll on Wednesday......................

Agree about pears btw, also my mum was told by a doc that it's not the first time they taste a food that they'll react. The first time triggrs the allergy, then they'll react the second time they eat it.

Hopefully I've remembered that right, feel free to correct me!
