Unprotected sex, breastfeeding and 4 week old...

So, I'm trying to work out how stupid I've been...

Got a 4 week old baby. Breastfeeding totally apart from 1 bottle of expressed milk at night. I'm guessing this creates a gap of around 6 or 7 hours between feeds once a day.

I had sex for the first time since the birth earlier today. I'm intending on getting some form of contraception sorted at my 6 week check, but I didn't bother today. However, now I'm panicking. I do not want any more kids, especially not one in 9 months! Have I been mega stupid or are the chances really low anyway?

Last time I was breastfeeding I didn't have a period until I totally stopped. I don't know whether this has any bearing on what happens this time or not.

I would rather not rush off for the morning after pill. Do I need to?! Confused

Of course.

Yes definitely. Breastfeeding isn't all that reliable and not at all if you're mixed feeding.

Not worth the risk if you're very sure you don't want anymore.

Oh pants. Tanks all. What about its effect on milk supply?

Just get the map. There is a 5 day one you can take as well which most people in America use

Ask the pharmacist about breast feeding

The youngest two have 22 months between them - again conceived when breastfeeding

My friend took the chance having been fine before. Baby due soon, 11 months after the last one... MAP!

And that's exclusively feeding on demand.

WHO says that there is a possibility of ovulation once breastfeeding interval reaches 5hrs. MAP

Apparently MAP is only 84 percent effective.....pharmacist suggested I get emergency coil fitted which is 100 percent. Have requested this with doctors.....just waiting for someone to call me back....

Ask for Ella one
That's the 5 day map and there is no reason why you can't take both the map and have a coil if its the non hormone coil

If you have just had a baby you might still be very tender down there to have a coil in also

I had a c section- so that's not a problem. I need contraception anyway- so am going to see if I can just get the coil fitted in time (would rather not take map in. In case it affects feeding). If not I'll get the Ella one.

Having a baby in 9 months will affect feeding more. I'd belt and braces this one and take it regardless, if you're really sure you don't want a baby.

You can't breastfeed for 36 hours after Ella-One, so Levonelle might be more suitable for you.

Sorry for slight scaremongering but most doctors won't insert a coil till at least 6 weeks post-birth. Earlier than that, especially if breastfeeding, and there's a greater risk of perforation.

I'd go for MAP anyway.

Thanks all. I won't make that mistake again. Have now taken MAP and got a prescription for mini pill! Gp said i couldn't have coil fitted until 12 weeks post c section.

Anyone who is impressed by my doing it 4 weeks post birth- don't be! I had a c section! Wink

Good job you took the MAP. After my 3rd baby we had an 'accident' whilst breastfeeding. I went to get the MAP but didn't take it because I was scared it would affect feeding and go to the baby through my milk. This is how DD 4 arrived.

This is going to sound awful but I'm a little jealous. I'm EBF and we're trying for #2 (baby #1 is 6 months) and nothing....

Get the morning after pill and pump and dump milk. Ask pharmacist about time scale!
