Ah the thread title says it all. My attempts at a routine have failed dismally the last two days, due to Evie's apparent inability to sleep in the morning. Yesterday she only slept 1 hour in the morning, when she was in the carrier, this morning just off and on - she'd cry every time I put her down, and if she dozed off in my arms, she'd cry when I put her down to sleep. Then both afternoons she slept for 5 hours and at that point I'm reluctant to wake her up to feed according to schedule. Nights are still fine, which I'm thankful for, but I wish she would just be able to spend 5 minutes not in my arms in the morning. It's the most difficult time as that is when ds needs entertaining

I've decided maternity leave is all wrong. I'd rather go back to work after 4 weeks, then take maternity leave when baby is 4 months and has learnt to self-soothe a little bit!

Sorry for moany post, just been a tough couple of days.

Aloha I know what you mean. Ds seems to be really fighting the sleep during the day so then gets really cranky. He fusses at breast, and not interested in play mat etc when over tired. Nightmare for cooking dinner as he won't go down.
Thankfully getting more of a pattern at night (even if I did feed 4 times!!)

I'm sorry to have to post this, but last night Bobbie moaned to be put in her cot, then slept for six hours from midnight. She's done it, become reasonable!

Aloha I hope that things get better soon. It's hard isn't it. I definitely agree with the mat leave thing!

Hawk that's amazing!

We had 10-2.30 then 3.30- 6.30 here last night so it could be worse.

AlohaMama · 08/08/2013 07:45

Well done Hawk!

I know I shouldn't complain too much as nights are pretty consistent - feed at 7.30-8.30 ish, work on getting to sleep (tonight was quite easy), and then she'll go till around 3.30/4.00 am. And then go straight back to sleep for another 1-1.5 hrs. It's just the mornings....

Never thought I'd say this but I'm quite looking forward to moving back in with my parents in 2 weeks, just to have an extra pair of hands to hold the baby!

It's evenings here that are a pain. Getting the children to bed when baby is cluster feeding and screaming when off the boob is a nightmare of fisticuffs and toothpaste all over the bathroom. But I can pay that price.

Aloha, love it when my mum comes and I can hand baby over... And have a hot brew! Interestingly, I still can't stomach coffee.

I don't know what we did or how we did it but Sephy slept from midnight till 7.15 last night Grin

(DD1 up at 2 after a nightmare though so you can't have it all!)

Morning! Marking my place.

Didn't really get into proper daytime routine with either of mine til starting weaning at 6 months and suspect this little lady will be similar! Might be easier if formula feeding.

Have both older kids out til 3pm today so loving the peace here! Just hope Anna let's me get some stuff done!

Marking place. Jabs are horrid aren't they. Did anyone else cry?! I just felt so mean! Admittedly she seemed perfectly fine within half an hour!

Anna is a different baby today, currently having her second decent nap. Trouble is - is this because a) I've given up dairy, b) I've given up fizzy drinks, c) I've persevered with the colic drops even though she spits most out, d) the boys are out or e) none of the above!!

Well just returned from our 6 week check and have officially lost what little faith I had in the hv. They weighed dd and she is now 12lb 10oz so obviously I was feeling very smug!! I then get told that I need to start spacing her feeds out....what a load of nonsense, what would I do say "sorry sweetie the hv said you need to wait a bit longer before I give you boob" grrrrrrr!!!!

Ola just a quick check in. Spent the morning with the NCT girls wondering just this i.e. whether I should be worried about the lack of daytime routine or whether I should just go with the flow. I've been reading articles 'African babies don't cry' which pretty much tell us to stop reading books and to take your cues from baby. It's quite true you know. When I fly long haul I can sit quite happily next to an African baby and not be disturbed vs a European or an american baby which can make for a nightmare journey. Or maybe I just sit next to the wrong people. Being a mother can really make you doubt yourself can't it!

Hello ladies - thanks for new thread mrsbri.

Any resemblance of a daytime routine went out the window this week with the dsds here (they go home Sunday evening). 8 year old DSD has just taken dd off of me as I finished changing her, because she can settle her.... Well dd has now fallen asleep on her, I did offer DSD to put her in Moses basket but no, she wants to hold her....hoping for a nice 3 hour nap and DSD won't pull that move again. She'll sulk either way, if I put dd down or now because she's stuck holding her, but this way being her choice she'll scream less.

That was quite whiny of me, I'm tired today, and its starting to show with less patience. And a little fed up with my house not being my own and having to remind DP that his dds would like to spend some time while they are here with him, and while he isn't in a grump or rushing around.

Roll on next week when I can get a routine back. Is it too early for Wine?!

What a load of nonsense Madame, why on earth are they suggesting that? Well done in the amazing feeding you're doing.

Hawk - yay! did you know that 6 hours in a stretch is the offical defination of 'sleeping through' that sleep specialist medical professionals use? you can now smugly say "oh gosh, she's sleeping through already." and look suitably 'perfect mum' at frazzled others... Wink

Madame - the HV rules, you don't ask for advice, if they offer you any, you nod and smile, nod and smile, then go off and do what works - and woo on the big baby !

i think we have a sort of routine, it's just a crap one for me, she sleeps pretty much all morning, but then is awake all evening - however right now she's asleep, but I'm putting that down to the jabs today, IIRC, DS slept loads in the 24 hours after each set of jabs. I'm a little concerned she's not taking enough milk in the day, is struggling to finish each bottle, so needing a couple of night feeds still, if I could just get her to load up in the day time we might get more sleep...

I ca'nt believe she's 9 weeks now! I also can't quite believe the bag I took to hospital is still sat in the corner of our bedroom with a couple of things in it that need to be put away.

Evening all, just checking in from my holidays! Currently have 6, 5, 3 & 3 year olds in bed, 1yo and M are still up and rampaging! We're with my sis, BIL, nephews and niece Smile nice but a bit stressy with all the kids.

M is 12 weeks old today Shock can't quite believe it tbh. He's got really smiley and alert over the last week or so, which is lovely - he spends ages looking around trying to see what's going on Grin

Re routines, not a chance! He's sleeping really well at night though, from midnight or 1am ish to 7 or 8am the last couple of nights, which is lovely - probably jinxed it now though Grin

Thanks curly, I have been a bit selfish this evening and had some me time (well dd was with me) but have made DP have his two and keep them busy!

I never quite understand hv's most come from some kind of a medical background, mainly nurses these days but some midwives....how can they be so useless. I spoke to mine about Violet's reflux and he (yeah a he) told me she was probably just taking too much milk in. Funnily enough when gp suggested talking to hv re giving the gaviscon and tips I decided not to bother. The pharmacist was far more helpful.

Dontmindifido... I can balance that smugness with frustration at not being able to do anything in the day. Well nothing useful anyway. I managed to go to the shops for a birthday card on my own with her today. I was very wobbly legged pushing the pram up a hill. A long way to go with my iron levels. I've been anaemic on and off for EVER but this is the worst I think.

So yes, that was an hour where I didn't have to hold her. Now is her light sleeping time so I'm in bed with a DVD set on. Baby is on my belly, iPad in front on the v-cushion. I've got my boob in her face, but not mouth, so that she feels happy enough to keep her eyes shut while she puffs and frowns and wrings her hands. This, and the constant need for sugar, is the hardest part of breastfeeding.

I've got HV on Monday. Not sure how good she is as last time she just filled in a ream of paperwork!
