Third Leader's Debate - BBC 29th April

(846 Posts)
CatherineHMumsnet England (MNHQ) Wed 28-Apr-10 11:11:28

In anticipation of tomorrow's TV debate, MN will be launching a fifth poll of Mumsnetter voting intentions as soon as the debate finishes. Can Cameron regain the ground he's lost? Will Clegg continue to build on his success following the first and second debates? We'll have to wait and see - but in the meantime, we've put together a handy table showing how your voting intentions and attitudes towards the party leaders have changed over the past four polls

NormaSnorks Wed 28-Apr-10 11:13:15

Hmm - just confirms to me how 'lib-demmy' Mumsnet really is (compared to RL)...

Explains a lot about what happens on various threads etc really....

CatherineHMumsnet England (MNHQ) Thu 29-Apr-10 10:13:38

So who's watching tonight? Wonder how it'll compare to ITV and SKY's efforts.

AitchTwoZone Thu 29-Apr-10 10:50:52

i went off nick clegg during the eddie mair interview last night. i was listening and thinking 'oh no this guy's a nobbo, i do hope he turns out to be dave cameron'. but no, it was cleggy. flailed in the face of smash hits questions such as 'what are you bad at?' and 'when did you last cry?'

if he'd been asked what colour his underpants are i doubt he'd have known the answer.

Cartoose Thu 29-Apr-10 11:19:28

I'll be watching. I'm strangely excited about it. I wish they'd allow the audience to clap, groan or whatever's appropriate though. Especially as this is the last one.

Sky's debate was way more showbizzy than ITV's wasn't it?

Cartoose Thu 29-Apr-10 11:21:25

Clegg's only just finding his feet really.

AitchTwoZone Thu 29-Apr-10 11:22:03

cartoose he was really cringey. and i say this as a fan.

Cartoose Thu 29-Apr-10 11:32:00

I missed that interview but questions such as "what are you bad at" are like standard job interview questions. If he can't get those answers right ... one wonders.

littlemoominmamma Thu 29-Apr-10 11:34:59

Weird how wildly different this poll is to all the others?

Are polls on chatrooms any easier to rig than the normal ones? Do they have any rules or guidelines?

Just imagining Nick Clegg frantically voting for himself on mumsnet in back of car smile

Wonder what his name is?

littlemoominmamma Thu 29-Apr-10 11:35:44

Or names?????

Ignoring sceptics (I expect the results reflect the demographics of mn, which may or may not represent the rest of society)

Bookmarking for later am looking forward to a good debate. (if I can stay awake)

Cartoose Thu 29-Apr-10 12:03:52

"Just imagining Nick Clegg frantically voting for himself on mumsnet in back of car"

haha. And Sue will be frantically voting for Gordon to try and save her job

RiverOfSleep Thu 29-Apr-10 12:13:10

I've had a postal vote so I've done mine already. Hoping no one says anything that will make me change my mind tonight because its too late!!

PinkFuschia Thu 29-Apr-10 12:27:32

Didn't hear the Eddie Mair interview but I've heard about it from friends. Bloody stupid questions though. The economy is going tits up; we are at war in Afghanistan, and all Mair wants to know is when was the last time NC cried. FFS.

AitchTwoZone Thu 29-Apr-10 12:29:35

i guess he thought that had been covered A Lot on the show, tbh. it was an interesting exercise, actually, bit like that scene in trainspotting when spud says 'ahm a bit oh ey PERFECTSHUNIST'.

Granny23 Thu 29-Apr-10 12:39:29

My party will not be represented in the debate. I have already postal voted. Waste of time to watch.

johnworf Thu 29-Apr-10 13:26:52

LOL @ Aitch.

Shall be watching here tonight with mucho interest as for me, it's the crucial debate re the economy - given that we're skint as a nation.

I wonder if Brown's face will crack with all the fixed smiling?

Btw, watching only out of interest as I know who I shall be voting for on the day. smile

johnworf Thu 29-Apr-10 13:28:01

I caught the R4 interview y'day. I found it rather embarrassing.......his answers were truly awful to some of the q's. shock

AitchTwoZone Thu 29-Apr-10 13:30:53

when dod you last cry. and i'm thinking THE KIDS SAY THE KIDS but he wibbled on about music instead, then wouldn't say which piece made him cry just that 'if i had to name all the pieces of music i cry at, eddie, we'd be here all day'. lolol. wuss.

Brollyflower Thu 29-Apr-10 13:47:04

OK vital q following my balls up last week blush. What time does it start? <pray I can get the dcs to bed in time>

Brollyflower Thu 29-Apr-10 13:48:15

Aitch -i was thinking that too. You have a 1 yr old, say at his birth fgs.

Timeoff Thu 29-Apr-10 14:48:16

I think the 'When did you last cry?' question was totally bizarre. The men I know don't seem to cry at all unless something truly dreadful happens. We're becoming too American, as concerned about personality and personal charisma as we are about ability, knowledge, commitment, integrity, energy and capacity for hard work. He might feel that's too private a question to broadcast on Radio 4. I certainly would. Equally, Gordon Brown's mutterings about the woman he met shouldn't affect the ratings of the Labour party. He's only human. We all moan about people we meet through work. Just not while we're radio miked. wink

AntoinetteOuradi Thu 29-Apr-10 14:58:07

I am now loathing the Lib Dems even more than I loathe Labour, and that is something. Ah well, I have always been a misfit, and I am now a misfit on MN as well. Still, who wants to follow the herd? wink

AitchTwoZone Thu 29-Apr-10 15:03:06

lol at the tory misfit. oh yeah.

MrsCrewe Thu 29-Apr-10 15:41:25

Tonights debate will be very interesting Clegg will finally have to 'fess up how he's going to pay for all his crazy ideas. In the LD manifesto he thinks he is going to pay for the tax cuts by getting all the people who don't pay their taxes to pay their taxes...Good luck with that!

CatherineHMumsnet England (MNHQ) Thu 29-Apr-10 15:42:50

Brollyflower - it kicks off at 8.30 on BBC1 (but is also on Radio 4, BBC News channel and the BBC website as well).

meandjoe Thu 29-Apr-10 16:15:21

Actually Clegg's ideas on how he will make the cuts make sense... by scrapping ridiculous schemes such as the ID cards and making sure tax credits aren't over/ underpaid paid. Taxing the people who can afford to be taxed. I will be watching and supporting him because in my eys he is the only one who can offer my son the kind of future and education I want him to have.

johnworf Thu 29-Apr-10 16:43:52

Yes, we've all said things about people behind their backs....however, we're not all running for Prime Minister are we? C'mon...if you start abusing people a week before the General Election, you can't expect to be popular and get them to vote for you (whatever your excuse)!

AitchTwoZone Thu 29-Apr-10 17:02:55

massive over-reaction, johnworf she said bigoted things and he said later that she was a bigot. i think it's a bit of a disgrace that he apologised, tbh.

yeah, I would have respected him more if he said, 'well, her views were quite bigoted...'

johnworf Thu 29-Apr-10 17:23:48

What is bigoted about the issue of immigration?

fyimate Thu 29-Apr-10 17:34:21

I'm already decided to vote Conservative, you'll be wasting your vote if you go Lib Dem, they cant win because they're too far down the ladder if you like, but there's a good chance that labour can still win because they have so many seats. Cons need all the votes they can get to beat them.
If you really dont fancy another 4 years of Gordan Brown then I suggest you vote Con, there's too much speculation over Lib Dems striking a deal with Labour in a hung Parliament.

AllQuietOnThePippisFront Thu 29-Apr-10 18:05:24

it's not the issue of immigration that is bigoted is what one think about immigration that might be bigoted.

ouryve Thu 29-Apr-10 18:32:53

fyimate - not fancying another 4 years of GordOn Brown is an utterly ridiculous reason for voting Conservative, especially for those who, like me, find very little to agree with in Tory policy. It's fear of a wasted vote that's got our political system into such a shambolic state in the first place. I'm rather pleased that voters now have the confidence to vote for the Lib Dems knowing that, even if it's not going to make a jot of difference to who their local MP will be, that their vote will count amongst the sheer numbers of votes that will highlight just how unrepresentative the first past the post system really is.

Persnickety Thu 29-Apr-10 18:35:48

It is botted because questioning immigration makes you a racist. (which it doesn't in my opinon, but that's what was meant by calling her a bigot)

ouryve Thu 29-Apr-10 18:37:32

And that was a heartfelt but extraordinarily rambling message from the Holy Run-on Sentence Party brought to you by Desperately Seeking Punctuation Because the Kids Seem To Have Hidden It All; I Guess This Place Could Do With A Tidy Up confused

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore Thu 29-Apr-10 18:40:13

Just popping in to mark my place for later.

Will be interesting how they react tonight after a strange week for all of them.

AitchTwoZone Thu 29-Apr-10 19:03:12

nonsense, it was the language that she used that betrayed her bigotry.

MmeLindt Thu 29-Apr-10 19:22:40

marking place for later

When does it start?

johnworf Thu 29-Apr-10 19:31:42

See many justifications for a man who is clearly not to be trusted.

Coolfonz Thu 29-Apr-10 19:36:48

No Gods. No Masters.

Turn it off and do something useful, like comb the gerbil.

mumutd Thu 29-Apr-10 20:24:24

Yes, I'll be watching it. Just need to get my eldest to bed so I can concentrate on it. Interested to see what DC and NC do about Browns blunder yesterday, I hope they don't get on their moral high horses.

Coolfonz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:24:55

38 minutes later: My gerbil has a quiff.

Sabs1981 Thu 29-Apr-10 20:26:58

BBC news just mentioned MN

I'm watching online again as DH is watching the footie again

anastaisia Thu 29-Apr-10 20:29:45

is better online Sabs, all the fun is in the twitter/blog/FBook responses

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:31:13

I'm here. I have ice cream this week instead of wine.

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 20:32:07

Evening all. I've got pudding.

sabs why was mn on the news?

Sabs1981 Thu 29-Apr-10 20:32:31

anastaisia and the comments on here smile

vesela Thu 29-Apr-10 20:32:38

I have fishfingers.

Molesworth Thu 29-Apr-10 20:33:10

DC and NC both look the same colour as fishfingers tonight confused

evening all.
its very pink this evening.

MmeLindt Thu 29-Apr-10 20:34:04

Never join Euro.

That is another reason not to vote for you, David

Sabs1981 Thu 29-Apr-10 20:34:06

nappy just before the debate started they were talking to some people about how the election was previously billed as the MN election but there hasnt been much evidence of that since the date of the election was announced

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:34:13

Good opening statement GB, get in there before the others can.

Sabs1981 Thu 29-Apr-10 20:34:31

First mention about yesterday's incident

ffs, I can't believe gb started with mention of yesterday's incident.

CUNextTuesday Thu 29-Apr-10 20:34:40

I would have laughed if GB's microphone had been off grin

thanks <whos anastatsia?>

LeninGrad Thu 29-Apr-10 20:35:14

Not watching, I am relying on you all to be impartial.

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:35:30

I think there is a general red/purple hue in the building, hence the colouring.

they all sound utterly exhausted. comeon chaps, theres a week to go yet.

mmelindt, right now it's a bloody relief not to use euro as our currency

FairyMum Thu 29-Apr-10 20:36:30

Very true - they all look shattered.

Clegg, I think you are great but you are wrong about the typhoon.

Sabs1981 Thu 29-Apr-10 20:36:59

BTW I have pretzels grin

lankyalto Thu 29-Apr-10 20:37:10

Evenin' all.

I haven't watched the others, but WTF are these podiums about? They look like they are on Fifteen to One.

Ooh I like GB's tie.

A friend said to me earlier that DC looks just like Henry the Green Engine. He does, he does!! (albeit with St Tropez)

zapostrophe Thu 29-Apr-10 20:37:19

Message withdrawn

yum to pretzels!

can I join in? Actually think GB is being honest, yes it will be tough

venue is on my daily commute, was all abuzz earlier with media vans, posters etc. I find it absurd that GB, who got us in to this mess, is out there claiming that he's the man to fix it hmm

MrsForgetful Thu 29-Apr-10 20:38:26

wish gordie had said that opening remark yesterday...100% better than apologising so excessively for something you didn't need to apologise for... to admit we all get things wrong is spot on.

SparrowGirl Thu 29-Apr-10 20:38:31

Brown is keeping his serious face on I notice...a good move. He is just far too creeping when he smiles!

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 20:38:39

Okay - how about an 'efficiency savings' round of debate bingo? Score 1.

GB sounded very nervous in his opening bit

lol at Henry, v true

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 20:39:24

GB doing well so far.

clegg looks too earnest grin

lankyalto Thu 29-Apr-10 20:39:51

The Cleggster is young, isn't he? I am normally a strictly radio 4 gal, so I have never actually seen him before.

I wish they would switch off the coloured light thing.

don't like sky (understatement) but their set up was better - more atmosphere.

Molesworth Thu 29-Apr-10 20:40:34

They've all had botox in their foreheads, I'm convinced of it.

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:40:40

Don't even the IMF say it's too soon to make cuts?

vesela Thu 29-Apr-10 20:41:03

Clegg is 2 months younger than Cameron (or older - can't remember)

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:41:24

high five!!! <<that's for dc>>

mumutd Thu 29-Apr-10 20:41:41

I have a tub of Haagen-Dazs Vanilla ice-cream :0)

tougholdbird Thu 29-Apr-10 20:41:46

GB annoys me with his 'I'm the expert' stuff. If he had regulated the banks, not sold so much of the gold reserve at low price etc etc maybe we wouldn't be quite so badly off (although I'm not the expert either...)

FabIsGoingToGetFit Thu 29-Apr-10 20:41:50

I can't see NC as PM.

I wish GB would stop calling DC David.

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:42:13

Once again I am preempting GB's arguments!

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:42:39

Come on Nicky - get in there!

DC doesn't understand what's going on grin

Another high five!!!!

rokersmum Thu 29-Apr-10 20:43:12

GB just gave a creepy smile

CUNextTuesday Thu 29-Apr-10 20:43:12

Gosh they all look very plastic-faced

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 20:43:26

mumutd you win on the debate snacks front. Can we share?

herbietea Thu 29-Apr-10 20:43:48

lankyalto Thu 29-Apr-10 20:44:14

Have they been in the same positions before, I mean, with Cleggo in the middle? It makes it look like both DC and GB have to look to him, as if there is already a hung parliament.

LOL at Strawberry shortcake.

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 20:44:14

Go on GB - get angry. We (secretly) like it when you're angry.

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:44:28

I have G&B chocolate ice cream, and I'm not sharing! I'm eating for two you know grin

rokersmum Thu 29-Apr-10 20:44:39

totally agree TOB if only we still had those gold reserves

vesela Thu 29-Apr-10 20:44:50

I can't see that Cameron is winning over any undecideds with this.

justallovertheplace Thu 29-Apr-10 20:44:51

Nice to see NC has matched his tie to his skin tone confused

lobsters Thu 29-Apr-10 20:45:12

Right, time to get the wine out, it is so much nicer watching it without DH, he gets far too het up and opinionated

ronshar Thu 29-Apr-10 20:45:22

I now feel sick because I have eaten too many chocolate biscuits. Supposed to last all night but all gone. Silly debate gamesmile

can't concentrqte tonight. cat trying to sit on laptop and they are such odd colours. anything new said yet?

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:45:29

None of them have details! Even your party Nick!

mumutd Thu 29-Apr-10 20:45:36

I think you better, I can see myself eating the whole tub otherwise ;0)

BTW, I had never noticed that GB had such big ears before. I am a GB fan so why have I not noticed them before.

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 20:45:50

I agree. NC looking a bit 'young' tonight.

Labour = spend spend spend
NO ONE is taking money out of the economy....DC is right, govt waste has to be cut. The private sector can't carry a bloated public sector and benefits/social services costs that are out of control.

lucysnowe Thu 29-Apr-10 20:46:12

Was GB in the middle in the first one? I thought it was his time to be in the middle now.

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:46:25

Although I do agree with him on 'we should all work together'. So now they do want a coalition?

rokersmum Thu 29-Apr-10 20:46:28

why is DD repeating the questions?

MrsForgetful Thu 29-Apr-10 20:46:28

Bumperliouzzzzzz "I have G&B chocolate ice cream" (is that Gordon & Brown icecream???) grin

SparrowGirl Thu 29-Apr-10 20:46:32

Clegg's 'can't we all just be friends and get along' is cracking me up! Bless 'em,

yes NC shirt looking a bit big around the collar

ronshar Thu 29-Apr-10 20:46:58

Boring - back to IHT

MmeLindt Thu 29-Apr-10 20:47:11

Clegg is not really answering the questions. Just blathering about getting the chancellor together with shadow chancellor and Bank of England boss

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:47:14

GB requested not to go in the middle as he wouldn't be able to see one of them.

cinnamontoast Thu 29-Apr-10 20:47:14

Can't put gb in the middle because of his eye

FabIsGoingToGetFit Thu 29-Apr-10 20:47:20

GB has been on this position every time as he is blind in his left eye so it is so he can see.

Brollyflower Thu 29-Apr-10 20:47:33

<sneaks in late again>

"Ordinary hard-working families" <drink!!>

mumutd Thu 29-Apr-10 20:47:33

I think GB has been on the right on all 3 debates now.

Would be better if the audience could cheer and boo a bit.

JackBauer Thu 29-Apr-10 20:47:39

I can't take gordon brown seriously when he talks about fixing things, seeing as how he fucked it up (as chancellor) in the first place.

ronshar Thu 29-Apr-10 20:47:50

DD always repeats the Q on Question time.

CUNextTuesday Thu 29-Apr-10 20:47:56

oooh that questioner had such a beautiful fruity accent, I LOVE the west indian accent. Pity DavDim felt the need to repeat her question as if everyone was going to be a bit Majorie Dawes about it hmm

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:48:06

MrsForgetful I thought that as soon as I'd posted!

mumutd Thu 29-Apr-10 20:48:25

They should scrap the child trust fund for a start.

megcleary Thu 29-Apr-10 20:49:45

DC better tonight, and GB please stop banging on about the tory tax cut for the richer people

I am not a try but GB is wearing me down with the same sentance i hear every week on PMQ's

mumutd Thu 29-Apr-10 20:49:47

What is with the repeating of the questions?

ShadeofViolet Thu 29-Apr-10 20:49:48

The Make-up artist is having a laugh tonight!

They all look really haggered and DC has a five o'clock shadow, plus NC has a smooth chin but the rest is stubbly!

vesela Thu 29-Apr-10 20:50:19

I know - Gordon Brown is getting too easy a ride. Clegg said "got us into this mess" once, but I want to hear it again. and again.

cinnamontoast Thu 29-Apr-10 20:50:26

I am finding gb very convincing. He's been waiting for this one.

lankyalto Thu 29-Apr-10 20:50:31

I think GB is doing very well. I can't take DC seriously with that forehead.

(They still look like they need buzzers)

ronshar Thu 29-Apr-10 20:50:33

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:51:26

Is it really the most natural human instict? To leave your house to your children?

oh its all the same stuff. blah blah blah. why can't they talk about their favourite takeaway or something.
<can't be arsed mood>

lobsters Thu 29-Apr-10 20:51:31

DC has very shiney chin.

I don't think DC is doing a good job of justifying the inheritance thing

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 20:51:34

DC - you get to pass on 600K after that, you're taxed on the rest. 600K is hardly a swinging tax.

cinnamontoast Thu 29-Apr-10 20:51:35

Yeah dc, you're talking about 3000 people with massive estates, not most people.

mumutd Thu 29-Apr-10 20:51:49

lol at NC having a dig at DC. grin

ronshar Thu 29-Apr-10 20:52:24

Id rather leave my property to my children than to the labour party.

MmeLindt Thu 29-Apr-10 20:52:29

WE HEARD YOU NICK. £700 for everyone

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 20:52:41

Molesworth Thu 29-Apr-10 20:53:17

It IS unfair (the inheritance tax cut)

Same old tories indeed

megcleary Thu 29-Apr-10 20:53:37

cinnamontoast Thu 29-Apr-10 20:53:37

FabIsGoingToGetFit Thu 29-Apr-10 20:53:38

Now all I'm doing is concentrating on GB's ears

lobsters Thu 29-Apr-10 20:53:42

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 20:53:54

Oh dollytwat seeing as you're here, I've been meaning to stalk question you for ages. I was wondering given where you live and your job description whether you might work at the same place I do. Though I may be on the completely wrong track. Feel free to ignore if you don't want to answer

MmeLindt Thu 29-Apr-10 20:54:05

£50 000 is not a huge family income though, is it?

Jackbauer, you're right. What do labour take us for? Do they think we've forgotten who's been in charge the last 13 years?
I agree with DC on inheritance tax. We have to become a country where success is celebrated.
I lived in America for a couple of years, and I was amazed at their attitude to winning and success. Notwithstanding lack of healthcare etc, it really is the land of opportunity.

vesela Thu 29-Apr-10 20:55:26

Inmyhead - how do you justify the fact that our deficit is quite a lot bigger than elsewhere?

Molesworth Thu 29-Apr-10 20:56:24

DC - face it. Your inheritance tax cut is indefensible.

17,000 people pay inheritance tax - where does the 3000 people come from?

Isnt it better to tax the rich properly rather than taxing them twice when they die?

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 20:58:22

Vesla - our banks were closer to US banks, jumped in with both feet on risky mortgage packages and took the hit. Lack of regulation.

MmeLindt Thu 29-Apr-10 21:00:42

I think if you have a home worth over £600 000 then you can afford (or your children can) to pay a bit of tax on that.

The effects on families with an income of £50 - 80 000 (the tax credit cut) will be much larger.

Jog on by NC. You can't dictate how much bonus private institutions pay. Let the shareholders manage that. Govt. stay out of business and focus on regulating the industry.
Bankers typically have small salaries anyway and rely on bonuses to make it up.

FairyMum Thu 29-Apr-10 21:01:25

This is the first debate I have watched. I expected NC to be more impressive, DC is terrible. I think GB is doing well.

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 21:02:35

vesela - do you think the tory party (hands off buisiness philosophy) would have regulated the banks more? not a chance.

woosam Thu 29-Apr-10 21:02:46

Whiffle, how about child benefit?
Do something about that rather than paying it to parents like me who just pay it straight into a savings account for my kids. Government funded savings for affluent kids. Madness!

MorocconOil Thu 29-Apr-10 21:02:54

GB is the only one who knows what he's talking about. NC is out of his depth.

Bumperliouzzzzzz Thu 29-Apr-10 21:02:58

Agree with woosam. Better to help your children when in need and and then when you no longer need your worldly goods you pass them on for the hopeful better use on others.

But then I have no inheritance to come, just poor/spendthrift (but generous) parents, so I would say that!

Steery Thu 29-Apr-10 21:03:14

DC is right about the euro

lobsters Thu 29-Apr-10 21:04:49

Inmyhead - good point, i don't remember the tories crying out the boom objecting that the regulation was too lax

the problem with clegg's plan about bonuses is that no-one will go and work for british banks, they'll just going and work for the swiss/ americans/ japanese where they can get more money, and they'll be even more rudderless

mumutd Thu 29-Apr-10 21:05:07

woosam, ideologically, I agree re. child benefit. I haven't put enough thought into that one though.
I was disgusted when they cut vat, pissed £12bn up the wall right there. Even buying a relatively expensive £1000 item, £20 reduction is not going to matter to consumers but cumulative effect on govt finances was significant.

InmyheadIminParis Thu 29-Apr-10 21:33:45

MsDav - really? are they watching the same debate?

sophable Thu 29-Apr-10 21:33:45

yes agreed, break it down for the thickies:

illegal immigrants are here, their existence feeds criminality of the most pernicious kind (gangs), you CAN'T deport them because YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY LIVE BECAUSE THEY ARE UNDERGROUND.

the ONLY solution to this problem is to offer a ONE OFF amnesty.

that way your illegal immigrant who has been here for 10 years starts to pay tax PLUS they have to do community service (so it's not a free handshake in any way).

if you do NOTHING (GB and DC propose this), you are simply ignoring a problem that will not go away.

GB is barely looking at his notes, like he did in the first couple of debates. His answers are far more substantial than the others. DC is doing better than I expected, his policies are still terrible, but presentationally he looks reasonably comfortable on this topic.

NC's problem is that he has always delegated this stuff to Vince to deal with and now he's being thrown in at the deep end he is struggling.

With regard to the housing question, I don't think they answered that lady's question at all. People don't want to part rent/part own, or have houses through social housing schemes, though there is definitely room for those things. What she wants to know, as do I, is why houses are so damn astronomically expensive? Why do we base an economy on house prices? The lady in question was on a good income and couldn't afford a deposit. House prices should be three or four times your salary. Yet everyone talks about the housing market being buoyant like it's a good thing. It's not. None of the three addressed this at all.

wubblybubbly Thu 29-Apr-10 21:42:31

vesela, FGS, the recession is worldwide. This Government's policies have at least tried to help ordinary people through the roughest times, unlike the last recession under the tories, where 'high unemployment was a price worth paying for a healthy economy', where those same people losing their jobs were supposed to meet spiralling mortgage costs as interest rates hit 15% and the tories did NOWT to help people stay in their homes.

I wouldn't have dreamt of voting for Labour after Blair, but what Brown has done for ordinary people through this recession has swung it for me.
