Did anyone see the latest PPB for labour, fronted by Eddie Izzard. Genuis! I love that man

I saw a bit of it. I love Eddie too but I want my favourite tv people to have nothing to do with politics. It sort of spoils them for me for some reason. No matter who they support.

Ahh BendyBob, I don't mind folk standing up and saying what they think and it sounds like Eddie's been thinking about this for a long, long time. Plus, it's funny

Personally I didn't mind it but it did seem quite Americanized, in that it was a sort of snide attack on the Tories without much policy substance (unemployment! Interest rates! Thatcher!). Not sure it's the way I want UK politics to go.

I thought it was very good and nice to see a PPB that isn't a cure for insomnia but if he thinks Labour party is not in pocket of the big corporates and we pay the price for that every day already he is deluded.

policywonk, I can see your point but I do think, as a balance to all the leadership debates, the comic breeziness of it works rather well.

Anyway, I love the sentiment and I agree, despite 13 years of Labour, there's nowhere else I'd rather live. Britain is brilliant.

Yes, 'Britain is brilliant' is a hugely welcome antidote to the 'broken Britain' crap. Labour should have used that as their slogan this time around.

Britain is brilliant is .. brilliant - but somehow only works when EI or similar principled pop culturist says it. Can't quite imagine it coming out of front-bencher's mouth..

Although having said that, a future fair for all isn't quite fulfilling its early promise, is it ?

I know you can say quite without itallics, btw. I just choose not to.

Britain is Brilliant made me smile, but would sound a bit twattish coming from GB, as if he couldn't improve things further.

Maybe all Labour supporters should go out this weekend and get themselves a Britain is Brilliant T-shirt printed, and then go for a run in it.

posted already on a the concurrent thread- but what does Britain being brilliant have to do with Labour? hideous national debt for our children and a desire to keep spending our way out of the financial mess it created?

doesn't Eddie live in America though?

i really hope he pays UK tax!

No idea if Eddie pays UK tax but my guess would be yes. He's not daft. Would be a bit rich to reference Lord Ashcroft otherwise, non?

nothing would suprise me. look at Bono and all his moaning about governments paying up, when he dodges tax.

Bono and Eddie, different ball park chandellina. Can you really see Bono running through the UK with the GBP in tow, to raise funds?

Bono is so far up his own arse, he's almost inside out - allegedly

No need to search for it, there's another thread titled "Inspiring Eddie Izzard Labour broadcast" with a link.

" but what does Britain being brilliant have to do with Labour? "

Have been pondering that.
I think Britain is brilliant for a variety of reasons some of which we can thank Labour for and some of which Labour is threatening.

eg. Labour has done a lot to promote diversity and tolerance about things like race and sexuality and there is no way the Tories would have done this if they had been in charge all this time. (My local Tory MP voted against gay civil partnerships ).
However Britain is also brilliant cos of mad stuff like cheeserolling which are threatened by the excessive culture of health and safety paranoia and town hall bureaucracy gone mad, which is very much a Labour thing.

Had been meaning to add that it might have sounded pretty similar if he had said Lib Dem instead of Labour, as there was little about past achievements, and to me sounded like mostly negativity about the Conservatives (some of it deserved). Nothing firm about future policies from Labour, either.

I'm not sure if people would have voted for ID cards, some of the anti-terrorist laws which seem overbearing (like not taking photos of any police)... also what about proposals for a Trident replacement - Labour have excluded it from the next Defence review so they feel it is "automatic".
