Should be sacked at the very least - most of us would be investigated by the police if we did something similar;

Did you see the report that she (or her advisor) threatened the Telegraph, through more than one channel, with her (MM's) role in implementing the Levenson enquiry recommendations:

Tony Gallagher, a fomer telegraph editor, told the Today programme (Radio 4) that:

  • special advisor Joanna Hindley rang Telegrapgh reporter Holly Watts, to complain about HW's approaching MM's father, and saying she wanted to "flag up the connection" that MM was meeting with lots of editors "around Levenson". Basically, a threat of press regulation, to a newspaper holding MM to account - nice! There's a transcript and audio tape here: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/mps-expenses/conservative-mps-expenses/10746009/Maria-Miller-expenses-transcript-of-advisers-conversation-with-Telegraph.html
  • Gallagher also said Joanna Hindley rang a senior Telegrapgh executive to make that point
  • Gallagher then said he got a third call, from David Cameron's spokesman Craig Oliver, pointing out that MM was looking at [press regulation recommended by the] Levenson [enquiry] so the call was badly timed. (NB - in the Times article I got these three points out of, Craig Oliver denied this)

Rogues turn government Twitter feed against Miller

--

In comparison to recent events in this saga, what follows is light relief.

A so-called “rogue” Twitter user commandeered a government feed to post satirical comments about the Maria Miller expenses scandal, yesterday evening. (Saturday)

The three tweets appeared on the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s feed, where they were picked up and shared widely before government watchdogs had a chance to hush them up. The offending tweets have since been deleted from the DCMS feed.

“Seriously though guys which one of us hasn’t embezzled and cheated the taxpayer? #FreeMariaMiller,” ran the first tweet.

This was swiftly followed by one that claimed Miller, who falsely claimed more than £40,000 in mortgage interest payment for a south London house, saying it was her second home while her parents used it as their first, was “like a modern day Robin Hood, she robs the poor to help the rich”.

Miller, who made more than £1 million in profit when she sold the house in February, was ordered to pay back just £5,800 and apologise to Parliament for failing to co-operate with an investigation. The final rogue tweet asked: “Is @Maria_MillerMP guilty? We will let the public decide.”

Unfortunately it seems that the Conservative Party has rallied around the (confirmed) criminal in its ranks and has no intention of allowing British justice anywhere near Miller. They’re all in it together, you see.

That is why Grant Shapps, who knows a thing or three about false claims himself (ask him about his other persona, ‘Michael Green’) wants to “draw a line” under the affair – and why our pitifully weak comedy Prime Minister David Cameron wants to “leave it there”.

It seems the DCMS is also happy to “leave it there”. A spokeswoman has confirmed it was investigating the hacking but, when asked if Twitter or the police had been contacted, admitted: “All I’ve done is change the password.”

A Parliamentary investigation cleared Miller of using public money to provide for her parents, in spite of all the evidence that this was precisely what she had been doing, including a recent revelation that the size of energy bills for the house indicated that somebody had been using it as their main, rather than second, home.

The affair has set off a public outcry, with calls for Miller to resign or be sacked, and for the former Department for Work and Pensions minister to face the same criminal justice system as anyone else accused of wrongly taking taxpayers’ money – like a benefit cheat.

Did post it in AIBU but it got moved to petitions and campaigns after a short while. Anyway please publicise this petition via social media or in any other way - it gives us the general public a way of letting the government know that this is unacceptable. So far about 1400 have signed but I am sure many more would if they knew about it.

Maria Miller: Another Rotten Apple in Cameron’s Cabinet of Crooks

As Maria Miller is rightly hounded out of office and hopefully into the courts for her egregious abuse of privilege, many are pointing out that she is but one rotten cog in a thoroughly rotten machine. So if we want real change – the prosecution of Maria Miller is where we start, not where we stop.

A Hideous Double Standard

A002Maria Miller is Culture Secretary and Equalities Minister for the UK government. Between 2005 and 2009 she claimed £46,000 in fraudulent expenses on the mortgage on a family home that she later sold for £1.2m – and used her position to bully a commissioner in efforts to keep the whole thing quiet. Her punishment? Giving back £5,000 and a 32 second apology in the House of Commons.

Despite abusing the expenses system for four long years, only ending her scam when the MP Expenses Scandal broke in 2009, and her evasion of the ombudsman reviewing her expenses ever since – she has been backed by Prime Minister David Cameron and cabinet colleagues. Cameron says of her:

“Maria Miller is in her job and she is doing a good job as culture secretary.

“Also, she went through this process and the committee found that she had made a mistake in her mortgage claims. She paid back money. She made an apology and that’s the right thing to do.”

Were it not for the relentless pressure of the news media and public campaigns – that would have been the end of the matter for Maria Miller. She cheated, she tried to cover it up, and she kept her job and her profits. For Maria Miller, crime paid.

In contrast, when 22 year old Sacha Hall helped herself to several bags of waste food left out by Tesco after its refrigerators failed – she was immediately arrested, charged with handling stolen goods, and taken to court and given a 12 month conditional discharge. Tesco even admitted there was no value to the food as it was heading to the landfill.

There is truly one rule for them, and one for everyone else.
