I am doing a talk about persevering when you lose, to teenagers. The joy of losing, kind of
I need to slot in some christianity. very light touch. Just kind of " christians look to god to give them strength" etc.

ALl the stuff i have found is quite hard. Can anyone help with just a teaching or Bible ref please?

thanks

Psalms - lots there about trusting in God when all is going wrong but is that what you are after?

Or Paul getting shipwrecked, flogged etc and still keeping on going. Tough cookie Paul.

William Wilberforce and a lifetime to abolish slavery? Then you can use film clips from 'Amazing Grace'

PedroYoniLikesCrisps Sat 13-Apr-13 09:48:59

A quick Google of "bible giving up" found this this.

AtrociousYoni Sat 13-Apr-13 10:02:08

Christ allowing himself to "lose" on the cross for the bigger picture?

LadyMountbatten Sat 13-Apr-13 10:23:03

oh Paul shipwreck is good thanks

I have a theme already - just need the holy bit!

LadyMountbatten Sat 13-Apr-13 10:23:38

Thanks Pedro - yes I found that too - just some a bit abstract - blinking bible ;)

PedroYoniLikesCrisps Sat 13-Apr-13 20:27:10

Yeah, that's the problem with the bible really, all a bit ambiguous and abstract.

Perhaps you can find better examples in some more modern fiction like Harry Potter perhaps. That has far more consistency and the messages it conveys are stronger and more relevant to the modern world.

bumbleymummy Sat 13-Apr-13 20:29:40

Give it a rest pedro.

AnythingNotEverything Sat 13-Apr-13 20:30:42

Have you tried the beatitudes? The meek shall inherit the earth etc?

PedroYoniLikesCrisps Sat 13-Apr-13 21:33:04

Give it a rest pedro.

Sorry, not sure what you're getting at?

bumbleymummy Sat 13-Apr-13 21:38:33

Harry potter vs the bible. The whole 'the Bible is a load of nonsense and I'm going to take every opportunity on every possible thread to say so' gets a bit tired after a while. Give it a rest.

PedroYoniLikesCrisps Sat 13-Apr-13 21:40:31

Ummm, I didn't say that bumbley. Where do you get that from?

LadyMountbatten Sat 13-Apr-13 21:44:03

Lol at you guys.

I haven't read hp and won't be using. It has to be bible.

PedroYoniLikesCrisps Sat 13-Apr-13 21:48:05

Fair enough, just suggesting that it's actually a very rich source of perseverance stories.

I'm also fascinated that there are people who still haven't read it, lol!

bumbleymummy Sat 13-Apr-13 21:48:16

If I'm mistaken then I apologise, I may be mixing you up with another poster on another thread.

PedroYoniLikesCrisps Sat 13-Apr-13 21:50:24

You probably aren't, but I never said the bible was nonsense here. I was making a genuine suggestion to the OP and you start making stuff up about attacking the bible. Weird.

Redbindy Sat 13-Apr-13 21:53:04

Book of Job - that's the one where Satan has a bet with god and loses in the end. Mind you god made Job suffer for his (gods) gamble. Or try genesis, where god creates Adam and Eve and gives up on them both pretty easily.

LadyMountbatten Sat 13-Apr-13 21:59:08

Nor seen the film. Not interested.

bumbleymummy Sat 13-Apr-13 22:03:43

"Perhaps you can find better examples in some more modern fiction like Harry Potter perhaps. That has far more consistency and the messages it conveys are stronger and more relevant to the modern world."

LadyMountbatten Sat 13-Apr-13 22:05:06

Listen guys. IT HAS TO BE THE CHRISTIAN BIBLEA.

Whars with frigging Harry plopper?!

LadyMountbatten Sat 13-Apr-13 22:05:49

Lol at god giving up.

Please. I don't believe in god. This has to be godly.

It's not a moment to be atheist.

RealityQuake Sat 13-Apr-13 22:16:50

If you want perseverance, look at the book of Job. For a light a touch "In the Book of Job, Job who is a prophet in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, it shows how when losing everything, in circumstances completely beyond ones control, everything out of control but oneself, one can choose to listen to others or follow ones own self and persevere".

LadyMountbatten Sat 13-Apr-13 22:18:29

Thanks.
I'm veering towards old Paul and his crap luck.
He had a shit time didn't he?

RealityQuake Sat 13-Apr-13 22:26:49

Either is good, Job lost all of his children (6+), his home and all his belongings in horrendous 'natural' disasters, pretty much all his friends turned against him as did his wife for a time, and becomes horrendously, painfully ill (all for a celestial bet that was so out of his control, he did nothing wrong but what happens to him changes how other's see him and he never knows of why it is happening) while Paul's is mostly down to persecution by other people's perception of his actual actions and their perception of his faith and the whole why everything is going wrong is a bit more there. So it depends on what kind of lesson you're going for.

BlackeyedSusan Sat 13-Apr-13 23:58:25

actually, the harry potter thing is not such a bad idea. book 7 harry has to be killed as he is the 6th horcrux. it seemed like he had lost, but by dying it mde it possbile for voldemort to be defeated and killed. sound familiar?

who are you aiming the talk at?

bumbleymummy Sun 14-Apr-13 08:58:00

I was quoting pedro LadyM - not suggesting it!

LadyMountbatten Sun 14-Apr-13 09:08:44

Oh ta. Ill take another look at job

LadyMountbatten Sun 14-Apr-13 09:09:38

It HAS TO BE RELIGIOUS. IT HAS TO BE THE BIBLE.

Thanks for helping guys but I wil NOT be able to use Harry frigging potter!!

LadyMountbatten Sun 14-Apr-13 09:10:08

Plus I've never read any of the books. I've read more if the bible than Harry potter

LadyMountbatten Sun 14-Apr-13 09:10:26

Sorry bumbley. smile

LadyMountbatten Sun 14-Apr-13 09:11:35

The detail of why they put up with it won't matter too much. It's just to insert some religion somewhere.

happyhev Sun 14-Apr-13 20:51:59

Joseph, you know the one with the coat. His brothers sold him into slavery, but he did well and his master promoted him. then his master's wife accused him of trying it on with her and he ended up in jail. Then he interpreted one of pharaohs dreams and ended up pharaohs right hand man. The story is in the Genesis.

BlackeyedSusan Sun 14-Apr-13 22:09:47

but they will have read harry potter. it could be very powerful to make the link to fiction...especially if you use a clip of the film, which I have not seen so don't know if it is any good. get them to draw the links.

alternatively use lion the witch and the wardrobe.

you have not said which age group you are talking to, nor their background.

Bless you Pedro, just really feel I need to say that.

LadyMountbatten Mon 15-Apr-13 02:42:49

I have to include the bible.

I have the rest of it all sewn up. It's a frigging JOB INTERVIEW I CANNOT USE HARRY FUCKING POTTER.

LadyMountbatten Mon 15-Apr-13 02:44:34

Thanks for Joseph idea too.

BlackeyedSusan Mon 15-Apr-13 08:25:50

you can if you link it to the Bible. I was not saying do not use the bible, but use something that will illustrate the message. if it is only for a job interview and not to real teenagers it does not matter at all as much. if it ws for job interview, I would be looking t something even more contemporary to use with teenagers.

you have not said what age teenagers you are aiming at. there is a big difference between 13 and 18

LadyMountbatten Mon 15-Apr-13 08:27:51

Thanks for the tips. I'm cool. I know what I'm doing wrt the rest of it.

LadyMountbatten Mon 15-Apr-13 08:28:32

It's real teenagers. I've taught for 20 years. I think I've got the rest of it under control. smile

toriap2 Mon 15-Apr-13 08:34:04

Some of the parables in Luke are about not giving up.

LadyMountbatten Mon 15-Apr-13 08:34:55

Thanks tor

LifeofPo Mon 15-Apr-13 08:48:37

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

LadyMountbatten Mon 15-Apr-13 08:55:26

I'm going to say " St. Paul, he took some crap , didn't he?" And leave a big pause

Isabeller Mon 15-Apr-13 09:05:52

Ruth and Naomi? Ruth was determined not to abandon Naomi and didn't give up.

Women who didn't give up wanting children - Sarah?

Moses' mother didn't give up on saving her baby

Abigail confronted King David and saved her family

Just some ideas smile good luck, hope it goes well

bumbleymummy Mon 15-Apr-13 09:08:23

Good luck! smile
