Critical commentary/ Old Testament companion books?

More of a lurker than a poster but I was hoping that you kind people could recommend a companion book to the old testament.

I am atheist, though I do have an interest in the historical aspects of the bible. I believe that religion has had and continues to have an immense impact on our society. And, so with this in mind, where better to further my understanding than at the source material itself!

I have almost finished Exodus and have gleaned some interesting insights but I feel that I need some more analysis and context if that makes sense?

Having googled for a companion books it seems that the majority are aimed at christian groups and finding god etc. No offense to the religious among you, but I am looking for an unbiased take on the old testament. Finding one that is a thoughtful and accessible read would be marvelous.

Thank you in advance for your recommendations.

'Introducing the Old Testament' by John Drane would be a good place to start.

Etienne Charpentier's 'How to Read the Old Testament' is getting on a bit as it was published in 1981 but you can get it for 1p on Amazon. He is really good for basic history and genre.

Karen Armstrong has written some excellent, authoritative books on the Old Testament and the bible - try "The Bible: A Biography" or "The Case for God" for a more comprehensive overview of religion throughout the ages. She writes lucidly and intelligently and is immensely knowledgable.
