Not sure if this is the right place to post this but just wondered if any1 could help me, my dp wants 2 get ds christened as a catholic. He is a catholic, but i am not really religious at all ( i have been christened though as church of england)
could ds still be christened in a catholic church? & what about godparents? would they have 2 be catholic? if any1 could help or has any experiences like this i'd be really gratefull, thanks.

I'm catholic, dh is anglican. Both mine were baptised catholic. As long as one parent is a catholic, it doesn't matter about the other one, although they do have to be willing to bring the child up in the catholic faith. One godparent needs to be a catholic, and I think the other needs to be a baptised christian of any denomination.

hi beckybrastraps, thanks 4 that. How many godparents can u have? Just 2 or is it up to you? We cannot decide who 2 have as we both have big families & lots of close friends! Also what if they are not christened at all? Can they not be a godparent then? Sorry i really am clueless about all this! thanks for ur help!

I think they have to be christened, but all ours were so it wasn't something we went into. I also think you can have more than two, but again, I'm not sure. I would get in touch with the parish priest and ask. Ours is very helpful.

I am sure that the Godparents have to be Christened - 'cause one of ours wasn't and he had to step down and become a VIP to our ds2 instead. I think that there is some discretion that can be used with the number of godparents. Some priests insist on the traditional number - two of one sex and one of the other - but some are more flexible. You need to check out the situation at your local church.

Really? I've found two (one of each) to be the catholic norm. Are you thinking of the CofE?

one of each does seem to be normal in catholic baptisms but you can have more. My kids are baptised catholic as dh is catholic while I am not (was baptised CofE but that was the end of my association with the church!).

thanks 4 this. we really wanted 2 godfathers & 3 godmothers but by reading this dont think its gonna be possible! Also 2 of the godmothers r christened but 1 isn't & dont think either of the godfathers r! luckily we havent asked them all yet! So we just gonna have 2 talk to the priest i think & see what he says & prob change them all!
zubb- how many godparents have ur kids got then?

they each have one of each - I have 3 kids - anymore and we will be struggling with the catholic godparent part. If you plan on having more children don't use all your godparnet choices at once!
I have 4 godparents - 2 female and 3 male. but that was CofE.

My 3 kids all have 3 godparents, we are catholic and one godparent must be catholic and the others christened. you can use them more than once, my 2 sons have the same godfather.

yeah am planning on having more kids but we've also got loads of people we would like as godparents, the thing is though hardly any of them r catholic, as its only dp & a few of his family who are catholic, so dont really know what we are gonna do! I thought they might have 2 be christened but didn't think they would have 2 b catholic, thanks every1 anyway, if any1 else knows anything then plz say!!

what is a VIP?

normally in the Catholic Church you would have one Godfather and one Godmother. One of these has to be a confirmed Catholic so you might need to check that out with your friends and relations.

DS2 has 2 Godfathers though and it wasn't a problem. I did go to a baptism in our church where there were 14 godparents The priest was not impressed.
