Are there ingredients I need to exclude if baking a cake for a Muslim family?

Hi,
I want to bake a congratulatory cake for my Muslim neighbours. I am not religious, but I want to be sympathetic to their religious beliefs. Google mentions something about fat being an issue - is that something I need to be aware of? Or is there anything else I should bear in mind? Thanks for your help Smile

Definitely no bacon Smile

Lardy cakes are out.

If you think they might be strict, no vanilla essence either.

So a sponge made with Stork marg would be ok? (throws out recipe for bacon vodka cake)

To be honest, most Muslims I know operate an "avoid pork and booze if possible, and otherwise what I don't know can't hurt me" policy - but everyone's different and some people may be more strict. I think apart from some very specific processed foods which are made using techniques which involve alcohol, pretty much everything that's okay for a teetotal veggie is okay under Islam - but if you want to be sure I think you should wait and see if someone more knowledgeable comes along Smile

Lard, animal fat marge, booze and gelatin.

These days if it's ok for halal diets it usually has a little picture on it.

Avoid lard, gelatine and anything alcoholic (check vanilla essence) and that's it really.
