Are Mormons Christians?

I think they consider themselves to be Christians. But they have beliefs that are definitely not mainstream for Christianity.

I know some Mormons who definitely consider themselves to be Christian.

However, the church is not (if I recall correctly) a member of the worldwide council of churches and hold several different beliefs from Christians. For example, they have the Book of Mormon which is not recognised by the Christian Church. There are other significantly differing beliefs, such as their beliefs about hell.

I think technically they are recognised as a religious group in their own right that grew out of Christianity ( much like Jehovah's Witnesses). There is a correct term for it, but I cannot remember it for the life of me now.*

lecherrs has it right. For the World Council of Churches (the umbrella group of Christian churches) Mormonism is a separate religion that has its origins in Christianity but departs from it in important ways.
