Slavery and Freedom: can anyone (especially Jews) inspire me?

After years and years of traditional sedars (passover meals) my parents have thrown a curve ball....

"Could one of you from each couple lead a short discussion on their thoughts on freedom or slavery?"

DH and I both snorted, finding it both pompous and too much effort. But if we don't come up with something my parents will be you know blah blah blah. DH said we said that we should talk about being slaves to others' expectations, but I thinks that's a bit PA, even from me!

My thoughts (jaded maybe) were to discuss the slavery on our doorsteps: the trafficked people, those on wages at or below the NMW, the occasional stories you hear of indentured labour.

Or on a more positive note how those things make the press because we live in a society that has largely expunged this sort of servitude.

but how do you "lead a discussion?" My family are full of quite vocal, argumentative people who like to be right.

Your parents sound interesting!!! (In a good way!)

I think I would kick off with historical slavery implying it does not exist any more and then present a few statistics about modern slavery showing its just as prevalent now albeit in a different form.

Or is that the bleeding obvious?

Is sounds like preparing for a school debate. can I come

I think this is a very interesting idea..better than the endless droning that I think most people tune out. I have been thinking about the people interned in camps in North Korea. The horrid conditions they are forced to live under, the cruel punishment, the slave like conditions.

The world is not hearing a great deal of the plight of these people. I can't help but draw similarities between the Holocaust and what is occurring right now.

I think I may have to bring this up as a topic for our table.

Going to have to do it while the kids nap tomorrow. On the upside I've done most of the cooking for 2nd night, swapped the crockery etc and got out the paper plates and plastic cutlery for tomorrow. DS1 is beyond excited Hmm.
