Does anyone here know anything about Mormons?

I ask because a friend of mine has become one and seems to have turned into another person. Sometimes it is like she is on drugs (vacant grinning - and I noticed a lot of this from her friends I met). It seems a bit cult-like to me -when she went off to do her mission she had no contact with her family (apart from letters) and when her granddad died, her "minder" came to the funeral with her. She's now married to another Mormon and wears peculiar underwear and is having babies for Jesus. It's the complete change in personality that freaks me out. Sometimes I get flashes of the old Jenny, but then the shutters come down again and that's that.

From what I know of them they don't do any cult like brain washing. They are very supportive of each other, form very strong communities and discourage marrying 'out'. The peculier underwear is mandatory....according to a distant relitive who is an ex mormon.

They follow the teachings of the prophet Joseph smilth who was given a revelation by the Arch Angel Moroni (sp?). This detaied information about how the lost tribes of israel ended up in America (traveled in a wooden submarine) and later Jesus went there as well.

They follow the Bible but also the book of Mormon.

They believe that there are 'levels in heaven....women only get into the lowers IIRC. A man is 'promoted' when he has more mormon devendents and ancestors. the latter explains why they are so interested in family history. They often 'baptise' dead relatives.

My Step MIL is an ex mormon and her mother dotes on my kids (no blood relation) since they have 'elevated' her dead husband.

But not a cult as most people would understand the word

A friend of mine's brother was a Mormon for a while and they definitely live a life apart from normal society. I don't mean cult, but they are a bit odd to view from the outside. My friend's brother left them after a few years I think, and I met him a few months ago, having not seen him for years, and he seemed much happier than when he was a Mormon.

Funny thread about Mormon underwear .

Bit more about their undies, this is fascinating, I will never look at a Mormon again the same (without bursting into giggles, I mean):

"Fanatic Mormons, male and female wear long underwear, with Masonic pagan "good luck " symbols on them, the square, the Compass, and the Rule.

These are garments of the their Holy Priesthood, and called Magic Undies at the washing and anointing ceremonies in the LDS temple ceremony.

The patron is assisted in putting on the "Garment of the Holy Priesthood" this garment closely resembled a pair of long underwear and was only available in a one-piece style.

Today, however; some temple Mormons choose to wear a modified two-piece version.

Unique to this garment are markings sewn into them which are similar to those used in Freemasonry, over the right breast is a buttonhole which resembles a "square" (looks like a backward L); over the left breast is a "compass" (resembling a capital V), sewn into the abdomen and knee area is another marking which looks like an ordinary button-hole.

During their pre-endowment instructions, participants are told that if they are true and faithful to the covenants they will make in the ceremony, their "Garment of the Holy Priesthood will be a shield, and a protection against the power of the destroyer until they have finished your work here on earth".

Temple Mormons are also told that this garment must be worn throughout their lives, and represents the garment given to Adam in the Garden of Eden.

Stories of the sacred garment offering protection have long been a part of Mormon folklore if true, it would seem that wearing their garments would be the soldier's best friend against harm during war.

Yet, the LDS Church provides no proof that garment-wearing soldiers escaped death or injury during wartime conflict.

Are we to believe that garment-wearing Mormons are never injured or killed in traffic accidents?

Of course the Mormon can always claim that an injury "could have been worse" or that death was allowed because "there work on earth was done" Such answers, however, provide no environment to actually prove if the garments played any role whatsoever.

While the Bible tells the believer to have his "loins girt about with truth" and to put on the "breastplate of righteousness," such metaphorical language never implies Christians are to place their trust in actual physical objects. How about you, Mormon Mom, Dad and teenager, do you have on your magic undies?

Mormons must wear their magic underwear until death.

To take it off, for even a second, will send them to hell-fire, No underwear, no Heaven.

To find out more of the Mormon cult, and the dozens of false prophesies given by J. Smith read ?One nation under gods,? ?A history of the Mormon Church? by Richard Abanes.

MAT 24:31 God's Angels one day will blow trumpets and gather the real Saints from the jaws of death, and they won't be wearing magic undies.

Mormon underwear is like a rabbit?s foot used for good luck, but not so lucky for the rabbit. "

I had a colleague who was a mormon - but she never mentioned the underwear.... I think the only thing I noticed with her was that she had some very specific views about evolution (i.e. did not accept it) and that she wasn't allowed to come to my wedding (in a Catholic church)

I grew up in Idaho, which has quite a lot of mormons as it is next door to Utah, which is almost a "mormon nation state" of sorts.

Most non-mormons where I grew up would consider the Mormon church a "cult"... but a lighter, friendlier, version of one. They claim to follow the bible, but many of their beliefs and much of the "Book of Mormon" contradict the traditional bible- a lot of their beliefs are just down right bizzarre, I mean really odd, and it is for this reason many people consider it either a cult, or a "false religion" if you like the term better.

They are very insular, but that said, most of them are the nicest, most trustworthy, most dependable people you will meet. There is a saying in Idaho about men... "after the age of 24 all the good men are either taken, or mormon." (Which sadly, is pretty acurate)

I think Mormons are misguided and wrong in that what they believe goes against what the Gospel teaches.. but they are really nice people, and they do take REALLY good care of each other. If only as much could be said about some of the main stream chrisitan churches.
