My cat has been poisoned

Devastated is an understatement. Charlie began to look dizzy yesterday, I then found him barely conscious, took him to the emergency vets where they concluded he's been poisoned with anti-freeze.

My poor baby is fighting for his life, vet has given him vodka (?!) intravenously but I am feeling horribly miserable after doing some research and learning they often don't recover. He is only 2 and usually healthy. Seeing the vet at 7.30 to find the results of his bloods now they have done everything they can - this will then prompt either further treatment or euthanasia.

I went to warn my neighbours, who informed me their FOUR cats were killed the exact same way, and never told us?!?!? Have informed RSPCA and police. I am really struggling to deal with the fact this is most likely a deliberate poisoning.

Charlie was showing early signs of renal and kidney failure yesterday but has made it through the night and these bloods will tell us if the treatment has helped. Feeling very very sad right now.

I guess I am just posting in the hope that someone knows of a cat who has survived this sad Please keep your fingers crossed for my precious Charlie sad

Bloody hell, I'm sorry. That's shocking. I really really hope he's ok. Will keep my fingers and toes crossed for you. <hugs>

TheBolter Sun 17-Jun-12 17:16:41

Oh Scooby I am so sorry, I now have two cats but was devastated when I lost one two years ago.

Sending lots of positive thoughts and prayers to little Charlie xxx

RandomMess Sun 17-Jun-12 17:20:10

How utterly utterly awful sad

BetterOnACamel Sun 17-Jun-12 17:21:03

shock I'm so sorry OP, what a horrific thing to happen! Poor Charlie, I'd be completely devastated. Sending you a ((BIG HUG)) and keeping it all crossed for Charlie - and hoping karma really gets back at whoever would do such a heinous thing to an animal!

Oh god that's just horrific! sad poor poor cat sad I really am so sorry to hear. ((( hugs)))

Some people are wicked, I do hope Charlie pulls through.

slatternlymother Sun 17-Jun-12 17:23:21

Oh my God I'm so sad and angry on your behalf. Your poor, poor cat I really hope he pulls through.

Did your neighbours know you had a cat? Maybe they didn't realise and so that's why they didn't say anything?

EauRouge Sun 17-Jun-12 17:23:51

Oh no, poor Charlie sad I hope the fuckers that did it get caught. Fingers crossed for Charlie.

QOD Sun 17-Jun-12 17:24:06

Omg that's so sick. Poor baby

Doodlekitty Sun 17-Jun-12 17:24:08

Oh god, that's horrific. Fingers crossed for you.
Our dog suffered similar 2 years ago but hers was not deliberate. She got poisoned by blue green algae which usually kills within 12 hours. We got her to vets and she was given charcoal and a drip and was fully recovered within a day. It's terrifying but some of them, like my girlie, defy the statistics. Thinking of you

AdventuresWithVoles Sun 17-Jun-12 17:24:38

Scarey, does rumour mill have any ideas who or why?

edam Sun 17-Jun-12 17:28:22

Oh, I'm so sorry, poor Charlie. Am sending very strong wishes for a recovery. How horrible.

ScoobyDoo2012 Sun 17-Jun-12 17:30:11

No we live in a really quiet town everyone is older middle class, yes neighbours knew. We have another cat who is - thank god - healthy. We are not letting her out of the house, not sure what to do about her. Thinking of buying a cat lead. It was apparently in our local newspaper a few months ago, but we only found out yesterday.

My ds keeps asking when he's coming home, he's only 4 so doesn't understand sad We got Charlie when our precious cat was run over and killed aged 14 2 years ago and it's coming up to the anniversary of his death, this is just mortifying.

I can't decide what I'm feeling the most- anger or sadness. I just want to scream and cry (and fucking kill whoever did this). The vet has been amazing. He stayed 3 hours after his shift, fighting for Charlie. We stupidly don't have insurance so are running up a large bill fast, he even bought the vodka out of his own money (and informed us it was the most expensive bottle he's ever bought- the more expensive- the purer).

Every time the phone rings I'm convinced they are going to tell me we have lost him. Oh god this is a living nightmare.

Pinkie29 Sun 17-Jun-12 17:31:56

That's awful sad I know that anti-freeze is very tasty to cats but some horrid person has blatantly left it out in their garden or something!! Can't see how else 4 cats in the same area would suffer the same fate sad

edam Sun 17-Jun-12 17:34:54

Why don't the manufacturers put something in anti-freeze to make it taste horrid to cats, so they spit it out after one tiny taste?

TwllBach Sun 17-Jun-12 17:39:30

That's Awful OP, I'm so sorry sad I'd be devastated if that was my cat - I can't believe someone would do that on purpose?

I've got my fingers firmly crossed for you.

VivaLeBeaver Sun 17-Jun-12 17:40:12

I had a cat with very similar symptoms but vet reckoned it was rat poison not antifreeze. Cat came staggering into the house and collapsed.

Cat was given loads of Vit K to combat the internal bleeding. Is your vet sure its not rat poison?

My cat survived. Hope yours does. Awful, awful thing to happen.

ScoobyDoo2012 Sun 17-Jun-12 17:43:08

I have had everyone I know signing this today, it's a petition to get a bitter substance added to antifreeze so they don't eat it. I have set up a Facebook group and am making posters to put everywhere in my local area.

As far as I see, Charlie is fighting- the least I can do is join him in his fight. He's being so brave. They've put him by a window, and apparently has a hangover due to all the vodka they administered last night.

Do these people not realise the pain the cause?! Or do they just not give a shit?! They should be put in prison, I don't think that would be in any way an over-reaction. What if my ds had somehow consumed it?! Grr the anger is setting in again.

PullUpAPew Sun 17-Jun-12 17:44:26

So sorry to hear this. I hope the Police/RSPCA are supportive. Fingers crossed for Charlie, your vet sounds great.

ScoobyDoo2012 Sun 17-Jun-12 17:44:41

Hmm he didn't mention rat poison? Just said anti-freeze based on his bloods. I know they are giving him vitamin K and calcium. Will research rat poison now...

VivaLeBeaver Sun 17-Jun-12 17:45:49

Well I guess if antifreeze affects blood values the vet knows what he's talking about. I would think if its rat poison their clotting would be low or something......

ScoobyDoo2012 Sun 17-Jun-12 17:47:28

His clotting is low, when they tried to fit catheter he began to bleed very easily :S

PorkyandBess Sun 17-Jun-12 17:54:22

How absolutely heartbreaking for you.

Could this be deliberate? Would a cat drink antifreeze if it came across it?

I really hope he pulls through, your vet sounds fab.

PorkyandBess Sun 17-Jun-12 17:57:03

Okay, have just read your petition thread so I understand how cats could come to drink it.

How awful, I will be adding my name to petition.

ScoobyDoo2012 Sun 17-Jun-12 17:58:46

Hi, based on our neighbours 4 cats and cats from the other side of the village all dying from the same thing we suspect deliberate. And yes, from what I understand antifreeze has a sweet taste that animals are drawn to sad

TheMonster Sun 17-Jun-12 17:59:45

link to petition

I really hope he pulls through. There are some wicked people around. I have heard to dogs being poisoned by slug pellets too. sad

Pickles77 Sun 17-Jun-12 18:00:23

I really hope he's okay, <hugs>

ScoobyDoo2012 Sun 17-Jun-12 18:10:12

Thank you everyone... I am both praying for 7.30 and dreading it. I feel utterly sick. That cat is a member of our family and if human to cat kidney transplants were possible I would be the first in line to be tested sad Little Charlie has no idea how many people are praying he'll be okay.

SleepyFergus Sun 17-Jun-12 18:19:03

So sorry to read of this. Some very depraved and wicked people out there. Hoping Charlie pulls through. In meantime have signed petition and about to post link into my FB page. Hugs x

Elkieb Sun 17-Jun-12 18:23:55

How could anyone do that to a cat sad. Hope Charlie pulls through okay and is home soon.

Pinkie29 Sun 17-Jun-12 18:25:04

scooby I feel the same about my cat! It's vile how someone can hurt them like that and chances are its some stupid old biddy who had her flowers trampled on one too many times and doesn't realise the damage it can do! Hope he pulls through he's clearly a much loved kittie!

NoVegBeforeHerMej Sun 17-Jun-12 18:25:10

This is horrible.
Your poor Charlie, and poor all of you.

Wishing all the best.

Petition signed!!!!! Willing Charlie to pul thru!!! sad

NatashaBee Sun 17-Jun-12 18:52:12

Everything crossed for Charlie sad

ScoobyDoo2012 Sun 17-Jun-12 19:01:11

Thank you, will be leaving in 15 minutes to go to the vet... Oh god I feel sick. We are wondering about the old lady who lives behind us, Charlie doesn't stray far but does go in her garden. She's got a gardener and is very particular about her garden... But I doubt we will ever know who did this sad

RandomMess Sun 17-Jun-12 19:09:29

Petition signed and will pass the link on, hope he pulls through.

edam Sun 17-Jun-12 19:57:12

signed petition, sending v best wishes to Charlie again.

ScoobyDoo2012 Sun 17-Jun-12 21:06:09

Charlie is hanging in there. Vet said he thought he'd be dead by now... So I guess this is a good sign? He seems better in himself but his blood results showed he now has full blown acute renal failure. Giving him another 24 hours on fluids and then re-assessing. Amazing vet even coming in tomorrow for charlie- on his day off. WISH we'd got him insured sad

I'll be thinking about him all day tomorrow sad he sounds like a tough kitty I really hope his kidneys recover!!! sad

Surely not deliberate? Why?

So sorry.

Fingers crossed xx

ScoobyDoo2012 Sun 17-Jun-12 21:19:00

Thank you so much. Non pet owners just don't understand sad Devastated just want him better. Even if he did get better now, the damage to his kidneys means he'd probably only live a year or so :S

edam Sun 17-Jun-12 21:24:26

Oh, poor Charlie. <crossing fingers the kidney damage isn't as bad as vet thinks at the moment>

Pinkie29 Sun 17-Jun-12 21:30:51

Ormiriathomimus sadly it is often deliberate, people deliberately put it out in their gardens it's very tasty to cats and usually a disgruntled gardener whose had their flowers ruined or vegetables pee'd on!

There was a story in the mail a few years back a woman was convicted of putting antifreeze in tuna and leaving it out for her neighbours cat she 'thought' it would just give them a dodgy tummy and put them off coming back? She killed both of them in a horrible way sad

QOD Sun 17-Jun-12 21:37:48

Horrible horrible people out there!

Have shared the petition on Facebook

People r just disgusting! It's such a nasty cruel thing to do. Not just the animal who suffers tremendously but the families who love them dearly. I hope who ever is responsible is caught and punished. Poor poor Charlie sad

YardBroom Sun 17-Jun-12 21:41:30

Come on charlie boy. You can pull through for your mum x

Send a leaflet to all local houses 'warning' them of the problem and letting them know that the police are involved.
This will warn cat owners but hopefully scare anyone doing it.

Charlie sounds a toughie , fingers crossed for him.

I am sorry Scooby. How horrible. There was a spate of that in our area too. It was in the paper a few months ago. Are you near me I wonder? Somerset?

ScoobyDoo2012 Sun 17-Jun-12 22:00:23

Nope, we are in Chester, Cheshire. I have read about Somerset and the daily mail article. Also shared it on Facebook, I have set up a group. I want to fight this, the fact is this is becoming more and more common. I am designing leaflets, warning people, telling them the symptoms and also including the fact this is illegal and that the perpetrator can be imprisoned.

I am so, so proud of charlie. Whatever happens he has put up a bloody good fight.

FEEdec Sun 17-Jun-12 22:07:31

I've signed the petition & posted a link on FB

Keeping everything crossed that little Charlie pulls through x

Still here, thinking of Charlie!!! Hope today brings good news. Hang in there Charlie your mummy loves you.

ScoobyDoo2012 Mon 18-Jun-12 10:03:27

Thank you smile No change overnight, which I guess is good. He's stable but critical, basically his blood results were discouraging but could have been worse and he seems settled in himself he isn't even on pain medication he just isn't in pain. It's confusing how he can look so much better but the blood results are telling us a different story. Repeating the bloods tonight in the DESPERATE hope of improvement. Ds turns 4 tomorrow but none of us can enjoy it due to this sad

SleepyFergus Mon 18-Jun-12 10:19:20

Fingers crossed for some improvement. I'm glad he's not in pain at the very least, but am still shocked for the wee mite. Take care x

Narketta Mon 18-Jun-12 10:22:59

There are some truly evil twisted people out there! I hope your boy pulls through scooby.

Years ago one of my mums cats (along with many others) was killed by cyanide, link to the newspaper article here

I have everything crossed for Charlie and hope that whoever did this to him is caught and punished.

Come on Charlie sad x

Pinkie29 Mon 18-Jun-12 17:11:16

Any news?? x

ScoobyDoo2012 Mon 18-Jun-12 18:48:18

Charlie STILL hanging on... Vet said he's spoken to specialists- 1 hadn't seen a single cat survive 24 hours and the other could name the few who had. They are doing the bloods tomorrow instead of today to give him that bit more time for his blood levels to drop. Pleaaaase please let him be ok!!!

Still willing him on for u sad come on Charlie u can do it x sad

ChuffMuffin Mon 18-Jun-12 19:06:01

Our cat was poisoned, we don't know what or who by, but she survived. She lost all her teeth but she was fine. Whoever did this is a sick bastard and I hope they get caught.

Sending lots of hugs to your family and Charlie x

MonaLotte Mon 18-Jun-12 19:11:08

Sending positive thoughts for Charlie. I really hope he pulls through.

It makes me feel sick that someone could do something so cruel to a defenceless animal. Hope the police catch the bastard.

SecretNutellaFix Mon 18-Jun-12 19:13:54

Hope there is good news for Charlie. HE's a strong fella, to still be here. Let's hope it's enough to pull him through.

NoVegBeforeHerMej Mon 18-Jun-12 19:19:42

So glad Charlie is holding on.
Still thinking of you all and hoping for the very best.

I've signed petition, and posted the link on my cats fb (hoping I can get away with admiting that on this board blush)

<positive thoughts for Charlie>

Pinkiemum Mon 18-Jun-12 19:26:34

I have have my fingers crossed for you too, the first cat we had when I was little was poisoned unfortunately he did not survive, we were pretty sure it was our next door neighbour.
Really hope he pulls through he sounds like a fighter.

picklesanne Mon 18-Jun-12 19:46:44

Do hope he is ok.

SleepyFergus Mon 18-Jun-12 20:36:27

Chuff sad at your toothless cat!

OP Any news on Charlie? Keeping fingers crossed for him. X

edam Mon 18-Jun-12 22:56:45

<sending good thoughts for Charlie>

How's Charlie? sad

picklesanne Tue 19-Jun-12 09:26:23

Hope Charlie is ok, keep checking for news.

JoannaFight Tue 19-Jun-12 09:36:39

Only just seen thissad

Pull through Charlie! Scooby I hope you and your family are bearing up. Poor, poor little catsad.

The thought that some sick monsters do this deliberately is beyond comprehensionangry Why and how could anyone be so hideously cruel??

I will sign the petition.

BetterOnACamel Tue 19-Jun-12 11:02:22

Any news? Hope he's bouncing back.
Come on Charlie!

ChuffMuffin Tue 19-Jun-12 14:55:10

SleepyFergus Aww thanks, honestly she was fine, we were just so glad she was alive. The only problem she (well, we!) ever had was that if you gave her fuss she'd get really excited and dribble everywhere! grin

All my fingers and toes are firmly crossed for Charlie and your family. Do you have any RSPCA charity shops near you? I bet they would let you put signs up in the windows. Also see if you can put up a warning in your local newsies window. Gumtree + Twitter would be good too. I would start one off for you on Twitter but my twitter is private so nobody can RT what I say. sad

SleepyFergus Tue 19-Jun-12 15:06:19

Chuff one of our cats is like that when he is 'over-petted', he dribbles a bit! And he has all his gnashers! Quite cute in a damp sort of way!!

ScoobyDoo2012 Tue 19-Jun-12 16:34:12

Hi, much is the same until the blood results tonight. I feel sick and horribly anxious. Charlie still hasn't eaten which the vet is very concerned about (and we are too because he usually LOVES his food). I cannot believe how draining this is, been on high alert since Saturday now.

I have designed peters to put in local area and journalist has interviewed me so will be reported in our local paper. Got a Facebook group going, doing everything i can to stop this happening to any other poor cat.

We are really struggling knowing what to do with our other cat who is crying to go outside. We tried a lead but she hates it. We are so scared to let her out but it also seems cruel to keep her in.

I have such a bad feeling about these blood results, even if they stay the same hope is not lost. I just think they are going to be even worse sad

You are doing an amazing thing warning other pet owners in the area!!! And the petition was nearing 5000 signitures when I last looked. I hope Charlie knows just how many people are rooting for him to come thru this. Sending more positive energy to him come on kitty u can do it x sad

ScoobyDoo2012 Tue 19-Jun-12 16:49:33

The vet just rang saying the bloods don't look good sad But they are trying to get a catheter in him now so am slightly confused as he had said if bloods are bad they will have to put him to sleep. It's my son's 4th birthday today and it is completely ruined, we all just want Charlie home sad

Sending love to Charlie. Off to sign the petition.

Fluffycloudland77 Tue 19-Jun-12 16:55:57

Someone my sil knows has a father who drowned a cat in a water butt for taking fish out of his pond.

People can be evil to cats, I hate it that people would go out of their way to harm something that I love so much.

The makers of anti freeze are culpable too though, humans can be poisened with it too iirc, I signed that petition ages ago.

sad sad sad

BuffyFairy Tue 19-Jun-12 17:14:49

So sorry to hear about Charlie, hope he pulls through. Really upsetting to read some of the stories on here, people can be shits.

Have signed the petition.

Happy birthday to your ds.

Pinkie29 Tue 19-Jun-12 19:20:33

It's makes my blood boil when people are so evil to cats, it's seems common to slate them and call them god knows what! Drives me mad I wouldn't dream of slating a dog lovers pet! Still praying for Charlie and signed the petition!

I'm not being mean but had a slight chuckle about the hangover, just the mental image of what my own cat would look like with one after a night on the town with a naughty tom!

ScoobyDoo2012 Tue 19-Jun-12 19:44:54

I know bless him the hangover was a funny concept. I have spent hours googling kidney transplants, this would probably "fix" charlie but even though it is legal in UK no vets do it sadsad WISH I could afford to go to america and get it done. Vet today said prognosis is "grave" and will prob be putting him to sleep tomorrow. He is so alert! He was purring when we stroked him before and trying to get closer to us, his eyes light up when he hears our voices, it is SO hard to give up on that sad

So sorry to hear sad he will always know how much you love him!!!

NoVegBeforeHerMej Tue 19-Jun-12 20:30:35

He sounds like he's putting up an amazing fight.

Come on Charlie.
Hoping for an overnight miracle for you all x

Scooby, I only just saw this. I am so sorry it is awful. Praying for a miracle Charlie that he will pull through, he sounds like a tough little guy. I have signed your petition and think that how you are dealing with this in amazing.

Our other cat has had to get used to going out on a lead everyday... surprisingly he has taken to it.

Fingers crossed for your boy xxxx

Thank you ladies, I can't stop crying just feel like each hour is an hour closer to my baby's death sad They can try one last thing called a "lavage", vet has said he highly doubts it will help but we will try nevertheless. The vet has been texting constantly, he sent one "sorry that we seem to be losing the battle" sadsad

Fluffycloudland77 Tue 19-Jun-12 22:08:46

It's just such a hard job for the vets to deal with, they must feel awful for you.

What a piece of shit to do this to an animal.

Pinkie29 Tue 19-Jun-12 22:44:04

scooby so sorry to hear sad is this because of the internal damage? Make sure you notify all the neighbours and the local paper, how someone can do this is beyond me, I gather cats pooping on a persons lawn is annoying but they are still somewhat feral and will go where they want. Makes me want to keep my cat indoors!

Joined and posted onto a friend x sad

ScoobyDoo2012 Tue 19-Jun-12 23:08:16

Charlie has had to be put to sleep, he took a turn for the worst. Thank you every one. I want to kill the fucker who has done this.

So sorry Scooby sad

PuggyMum Tue 19-Jun-12 23:11:56

Just read this thread and am so sorry to hear about poor Charlie. I'll be signing the petition immediately.

Give me a job inflicting pain on people who hurt animals and children. I swear I'd have a permanent smile on my face x

I hope there is a last minute miracle for Charlie and he makes a good recovery as he certainly put up a good fight.

Wishing you love and strength whatever he outcome. X x

OneHandWavingFree Tue 19-Jun-12 23:22:19

So sorry, Scooby. I'm so angry for you, for Charlie, and for your poor little ds having this happen to his family pet on his fourth birthday sad sad

So, so cruel. angry angry angry angry

He's not in pain anymore. You did every little thing possible for him, and by what you said earlier about his eyes lighting up, he knew that. xx

ScoobyDoo2012 Tue 19-Jun-12 23:23:18

i feel so so guilty but I just couldn't be there with him, I cannot watch someone do that. He didn't deserve this, whoever did this is pure evil. I don't like dogs, but I would never in a million years wish any harm on one, and am upset at the thought of them being in pain.

My poor poor baby, I just keep thinking, this time last week- he was perfect. His little kidneys were perfect. Someone has snatched him, destroyed him and left my family devastated.

Why is this becoming some sort of sick "trend"? I feel fucking sick.

ThatVikRinA22 Tue 19-Jun-12 23:29:07

im so sorry to read this. i have cats and i love them. they are family.

there are some very sick and horrible people in the world, i see alot of animal cruelty these days and it sticks with me.....

im very sad for you, you did everything you could. much love. x

ThatVikRinA22 Tue 19-Jun-12 23:32:11

i signed petition too.

MrsApplepants Tue 19-Jun-12 23:35:45

So sorry xx. Why anyone would do that to an animal is beyond comprehension.

Jux Tue 19-Jun-12 23:36:02

So so sorry. My heart goes out to you all. Poor, poor Charlie.

Put up the posters with a vengeance. Did you contact RSPCA?

There are some really vile, sick bastards out there.

ScoobyDoo2012 Tue 19-Jun-12 23:39:17

RSPCA never even called me back, I am going to make a complaint to them tomorrow they were unhelpful and useless.

This will mean my son's birthdays in future will have this awfully painful memory associated with it. Charlie only turned 2 in May, he was only a baby. Our last cat got hit by a car and we got charlie after he died, we were always terrified he'd be killed in the same way and I had read when they turn 2 the chance of being hit fall. It was only last month I remember this with relief.

Uuugh I am so fucking sad and pissed off I don't know what to do with myself!

stookiesackhouse Tue 19-Jun-12 23:54:54

I am so sorry about Charlie Scooby. He sounded like a fab cat. I shed a little tear when I got to end of thread and found out he didn't make it.

I have signed the petition and shared it on facebook.

My own little cat had a stroke last week. She is slowly pulling through but I have been so worried so I have some inkling of how you have been feeling. I think you did your very best for Charlie x

Pinkie29 Tue 19-Jun-12 23:59:19

Sorry scooby sad he'll be at peace now but I can't imagine the massive void he's left. I adore my cat only had her a few months and fully agree they are part of the family and bring so much joy to people.

Id like to get hold of the evil bugger and drip feed them antifreeze!! angryangry

sharklet Wed 20-Jun-12 04:02:04

Scooby, I am so sorry. Poor Charlie. I know how you feel. It leaves a huge void behind. I think my freinds thought I was mental when my cat was run over.

I cannot imagine the huge gap you are feeling now. HUge hugs for you and your DS.

Am going to spread the fb page around. I signed the petition earlier.

Take care of yourself xxxx

Cynner Wed 20-Jun-12 05:03:44

Sending you hugs and sympathy...there are no words to help the hurt right now. My Wiccan friend used to say this prayer for any beloved your soul to the arms of the mother, and know those who loved you, remember you..xx

I am so sorry. I hope the sick freak who did this rots in hell for eternity!!! sad good bye little Charlie sweet dreams your family love you very much. sad

I'm so sorry about your little kitty I just read the whole thread holding my breath hoping he'd be ok. What kind of sick bastard would do that not just to a helpless animal but also to the human family that love him? <hugs>

Westcountrylovescheese Wed 20-Jun-12 06:48:06

Petition signed.

This is horrific, poor little boy. Can't believe the nastiness of people. angry

Elkieb Wed 20-Jun-12 07:04:03

I'm so sorry sad

BlackSwan Wed 20-Jun-12 07:17:18

Poor Charlie. So sorry, our pets are so precious and important, it's beyond my comprehension that anyone would do something intentionally to hurt them. People who hurt animals are cowardly bullies and should go to jail.

kitsonkittykat Wed 20-Jun-12 07:32:19

Im so sorry to hear about Charlie, I've been reading the thread and hoping that he was going to be alright. The poor little boy! I know how much I love my cat, and you must be absolutely devestated.

This is why I keep my cat inside, he doesnt go out, and never will. You can make a good life for them inside, and never have to go through the pain of them being tortured by some sick bastard, or else run over by a car or some other awful fate.

SleepyFergus Wed 20-Jun-12 07:55:41

So, so sorry to read your news this morning. Poor wee Charlie. What a horrible thing for all of you to go through. At least he is out of pain now.

We have 2 cats and would be devastated if anything were to happen to them, so you have my utmost sympathy. Take care, xxx

I am so sorry.

MonaLotte Wed 20-Jun-12 09:06:07

So sorry about Charlie sad xxx

I hope they catch the evil bastard who did it.

MarshmallowFarm Wed 20-Jun-12 09:16:26

So so sorry Scooby. Have been keepig everything crossed for Charlie. What a truly horrendous experience for all of you.

Have you told the police? It is murder. How can people get away with murdering innocent creatures. I am not a Daily Mail type but in this instance would like to proverbially lock them up and throw away the key. Whoever has done this needs to be brought to justice.

Animals don't have enough of a voice in this or any other country. When you are feeling strong again please complain about the RSPCA's ineffectual response. I for one give them a lot of financial support in the belief that they care what happens to animals. Clearly in this instance they didn't angry

Thinking of you and your family. RIP lovely little Charlie sad

BetterOnACamel Wed 20-Jun-12 09:28:31

I'm so sorry Scooby. sad
I do hope whoever did this gets what's coming to them.
RIP little Charlie.

So sorry to read this Scooby.

I love the Wiccan saying - brought more tears to my eyes. And I am a great believer in Karma, so whoever did this will get their just desserts.

The RSPCA are pretty useless imo.

Big hugs for you and your family.

ScoobyDoo2012 Wed 20-Jun-12 10:08:56

Thank you again everyone. I did go to the police, who said they would have a "friendly word" with people in area, but never heard back. They said there's not much they can do.

Keep dreaming about Charlie. In work today trying to hold it together. I have lost hope in many national charities including RSPCA and will donate to local causes in future.

The last place I am going to try in our local cat protection charity, maybe they will be helpful. Going to tell ds Charlie has gone to live with the vet who's looking after him.

VivaLeBeaver Wed 20-Jun-12 10:29:20

Tell the local paper as well. My local one was very interested when my cat was poisoned and wrote an article.

ellenjames Wed 20-Jun-12 10:32:07

am so sorry for you all, it is sick what some people do to animals. Thinking of you x

Awww shit sad

NoVegBeforeHerMej Wed 20-Jun-12 11:29:52

I'm so sorry Scooby.
Hugs to you all x

ScoobyDoo2012 Wed 20-Jun-12 11:35:43

This is the email I have just sent to the rspca

I would like to complain about the recent handling of my case. I contacted the RSPCA on Sunday after discovering my cat had been poisoned using anti-freeze. Sadly, my cat is not alone, our local area seems to have seen a spike in such cases over the past few months. I informed my call handler that my neighbour had lost 4 cats to anti-freeze poisoning, and others nearby. I was told I would hear back shortly, and never did.

Frankly I am angry and disappointed with how this has been dealt with. As the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals I expected this to be treated with the upmost concern. If you, the RSPCA, are not interested, then what hope do other animals in my area have? How many more have to be killed before action is taken?

I have a young child living at home and currently we do not know whether the anti-freeze is distributed in victim's gardens or if these cats are finding it. I consequently don't feel happy to let my son, or remaining cat, out of the house.

I have spoken with the local press who were saddened by your response. Our community is being targeted. Cases of these poisonings seem to be streets apart, but all within an uncomfortably close radius. We are left wondering if it is a potential gardener who is responsible.

I am taking all action I possibly can including engaging in social networking and distributing warning leaflets in my neighbourhood. I have spoken to people who donate to the RSPCA who have been left angry and wondering what their money is being spent on, if not a case like this. I have lost all faith in this charity.

CheeseandPickledOnion Wed 20-Jun-12 11:45:35

So, so sorry for you all. Poor Charlie.

It's a wicked, evil thing to posion someone's beloved pet. I hope they die a miserable painful death too.

redrubyshoes Wed 20-Jun-12 11:58:45

So sorry Scooby. I signed that petition years ago to put a bittering agent in anti-freeze and nothing has been done.

I despair I really do. Maybe something will happen if the Prime Minister's cat gets poisoned.

Moodykat Wed 20-Jun-12 12:11:24

Poor Charlie and poor you. We currently have a spate of this going on around us, has been in the local paper. It is sick and the people doing it are cunts. No other word for them.

PedanticPanda Wed 20-Jun-12 12:47:43

So sorry to hear about little Charlie sad we have the SSPCA here in Scotland and they are completely useless.

PedanticPanda Wed 20-Jun-12 12:52:38

I've joined the group and posted it on my wall with friends tagged to encourage friends to join

ScoobyDoo2012 Wed 20-Jun-12 13:17:03

Thank you. redrubyshoes wow I didn't realise how long this had been around. Hopefully with social networking so big this will help. How many more poor cats need to die. It is too late for my Charlie, and we are heart broken. But I want to stop this happening to anyone else, wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

JoannaFight Wed 20-Jun-12 13:19:53

Scooby I am so so sorry sad Your poor beautiful Charlie and also you and your family toosad.

You are right to be incensed. 'Friendly word' from the police? Oh that'll do the trick. What a jokehmm. There never seems to be 'much they can do' about anything. God what a lawless vindictive world we live inangry

And the rspca could be doing so much more too.

This is appalling and so easily avoided if only the ingredient in anti freeze could be changed.

hellymelly Wed 20-Jun-12 13:49:59

Oh Gosh I am so terribly sorry to read this thread. That has to be the worst possible way to lose a loved animal, to have had him murdered by someone. And you still have the fear hanging over you as there is clearly someone sick in the neighbourhood. I agree that leafleting every house is a good idea, as if someone misguidedly thinks that it will make the cats ill, rather than kill them, then the info will be out there, and all your neighbours with pets and/or small children will be on high alert. Maybe let the local radio station know too?
Really feel for you, and am very sad about your lovely cat.
Sounds as though you had an amzing vet who really did do everything to give him a chance.

elastamum Wed 20-Jun-12 13:54:17

Really sorry to hear this sad

Unfortunatley the RSPCA are underresourced and pretty useless. We had a horse near us that was terribly ill and untreated. After 8 calls to the RSPCA over about 3 months I accosted the owners, forced them to sell it to me and took it to my vet who put the poor thing down as it was too late to be saved.

I then got a call from the RSPCA the next day asking how they couold help!!!

foolserrand Wed 20-Jun-12 14:49:50

I'm so sorry for your loss, poor Charlie. Have joined the Facebook group, signed the petition and implored my friends to do the same.

ChuffMuffin Wed 20-Jun-12 17:16:11

I'm so, so sorry to hear. Hellymelly is right, it is murder. I hope the person who has done gets a well deserved metric fuckton of bad karma.

You should definitely contact The Chester Chronicle.

I'm so sorry again, big hugs to you and your family.

changeforthebetter Wed 20-Jun-12 17:24:58

So sorry about Charlie.

Petition signed brew

PorkyandBess Wed 20-Jun-12 19:56:51

So sad to hear about your lovely cat.

edam Wed 20-Jun-12 19:59:44

I'm so sorry Scooby. Your vet sounds like a good 'un, seems he did everything he could possibly try for Charlie.

Sometimes I really wish karma worked so bastards like the swines who poisoned Charlie get what they deserve...

2MumsAreBetterThan1 Wed 20-Jun-12 20:11:36

So very sorry to hear about Charlie, how people can do this to an innocent animal is beyond me.

Do you mind sending me a pm with the area this happened in, I am also in Chester and now very worried about letting my cats outdoors.

Thanks x

Hi Scoobydoo, so sorry to hear about your cat charlie. Our lovely cat Jack was killed in exactly the same way 5 weeks ago and we are still heartbroken! We know who did it and have informed the police, but they have not got back to us. It is just heartbreaking isn't it? Can you post a link to your facebook group so I can join? We miss our lovely jack so much, they certainly are a big part of the family. He was so special! Sending hugs, know exactly how you must be feeling. It's devastating!

zara206y Sun 05-Aug-12 15:19:12

I have worked in vets for 15 years and seen this so many times. Sometimes its because people put down poision down for the rats mice etc then kitty comes along and eats them. Then the cat is ill. The way rat poison works is the main ingredient is Warfarin. This is a blood thinning agent, thus it bleeds the animals inside out. They bleed to death. Its horrendous and very cruel. Cats generally react by looking dazed and wobbly, drunk etc or just very flat, mouth ulcers etc. Kidney and Liver failure is part of the course, this can be controlled with medications and fluids given I.V to thin them out. Sometimes if caught early enough can turn them around. Cats then generally will always have damaged Liver/Kidneys and generally need to be on a specific diet made by someone like 'Hills'. Some cats will pull through, some unfortunately wont. Its very hard to prevent this and often its not deliberate as you dont often see antifreeze lying around. Its generally done like i said..we poision the rats, cats eat them! I hope your kitty pulls through and that its caught in time. xx
