If someone came to you with a pet who had an illness (not life threatening) that was unpleasant but manageable by someone with time and patience. They ask you to euthanise the pet, would you?

I am asking from an ethical pov that would you put a pet to sleep just because you were asked or would you refuse if the illness wasnt life threatening or ruining the pets quality of life?

I am trying to put my mind at ease after something someone told me yesterday :(

TIA

Sorry I am not a vet, but in that situation, I think the best, although unpleasant, option would be to agree to do it. If they refused on ethical grounds, they can't force the owner to manage to condition correctly, so you are likely to end up with an animal suffering, or even dumped, because the owner doesn't have the resources to manage the condition.

It obviously depends on the condition though, and how much suffering it would cause the animal, as well as how much time and effort, the managing of the condition would take.

Thankyou smartie, i hadnt thought of that. They had a friend (with plenty of time and patience) who offered to rehome him but they refused :(

A very upsetting tale which could out me I think.

Thankyou for your reply Thanks

That does sound sad, some people should not be allowed to have animals! Sad

I am afraid that in these financially and time constrained times euthanasia is often a treatment option. Not something we like, but whilst the condition is manageable if the owner is not prepared to manage it euthanasia can be the best option for the pet.
