Who has the most unusual pet on MN?

I went into an exotic pet shop the other day and got chatting with the owner. He said people can't get enough of pygmy hedgehogs at the moment. Just wondered what unusual pets were around out there and whats its like living with them?

I had a tarantula (zebra knee). Not sure how unusual that was but he was a rubbish pet really.

well, sort of limited physical contact really - I like a pet I can cuddle, they are nice and furry though

obviously they can be handled but I don't think they like it much, and zebra knees are the urticating hair sort (flick barbed hairs when threatened/angry) so not really ideal

Well we have two tortoises, do they count as unusual? All dc's friends seem to think so, but I had one as a child too so not unusual for us but very low maintenance and lovely little personalities too

DD has a Gheko and a Bearded Dragon - but they don't live with us at the moment because we are moving. Thankfully, my younger brother is a reptile breeder so he's happy to have them.

DD goes once a week to her 'job' and helps him clean all the snakes and beardies out. He has set up some kind of breeding systems for mealworms and cockroaches to feed them so she's often found sifting for grubs in the sawdust

MissKeith - I would love a tortoise! I think we will get one as a house warming gift once we are settled.

I think mn sarahstratton has Mortimer who's a raven. I think that's the most unusual even compared to my two snakes.

Golf - they are lovely pets! Our two are lovely sunny little things, not cuddly obviously, but have definite personality traits. If we go away for a few days they come straight out to say hello when I get back - the dc's think I'm imagining this but I know I'm not

We've got giant stick insects. I'd love a giant millipede too but DH isn't keen :(

My cat is thick very unusual, he has 27 toes.

My tortoise is very friendly, has a great personality and I adore her. Quite easy to look after really and takes herself for walks.

Love multi-toed cats! Wow a raven - they are huge where did it live?? As for the insects well more than 4 legs and I shudder!!!

Wow - I didn't realise tortoises were so popular on MN. I think with this many of us there's not much chance of them being considered "most unusual pet"...

I currently have seven but two of those are a breeding pair, and I also seem to end up fostering/rehab'ing lots, so the total number I have at any one time tends to be quite variable :)

DH used to have a slow-worm called Asquith. Don't know about unusual, but it's got to win a prize for being the dullest. Spent 95% of its time under a bit of wood, hibernating, and you couldn't pick it up (not that I had any intention of doing so) in case its tail fell off. Bit useless as it was all tail.
When we went away on holiday, mil used to end up having to dig up live worms to feed it. It was so hopeless, you actually had to dangle them into his mouth, otherwise he missed them.
Apparently, they're notorious for escaping, but you could have kept this one on an open plate and it wouldn't have gone anywhere.
Sadly he died about 10 years ago. DS, 6 at the time who, to my knowledge, wasn't even aware we had a slow-worm, became very upset at school and wrote about it in the worry box!!

Nothing too unusual, snakes. But I do have rather a few... and they have their own room... does that make them more unusual?

I would really, really like a skunk, but I think they are maybe a pet for when I don't have small children... they are suprisingly popular as pets amongst exotic keepers. I would also like a pair of Richardson's Ground Squirrels, but they are quite hard to get hold of.

And i knew someone who had a raven who used to frequent medieval reinactments, pretty cool! They are very intelligent, like magpies

I've had two polecat ferrets before, couldn't keep them as when i moved landlord wanted no pets. Took them out for walks and everything! Always used to get stopped!
