Dogs licking your face!

Hello

We have a 13 week old cairn puppy who has been with us for a week.

At first we allowed him to lick our faces (reluctantly!) as it's his way of showing affection and wanted to bond with him.

We have now found out that you shouldn't do this in case of catching worms etc but we are unsure how to now stop him doing it.

I know this might seem a bit odd but I would really appreciate any advice.Thanks.

Well they lick their bums don't they - so best that they don't lick your face too!

Basically repeated use of the word 'No' in firm authoritative tone, and removal of face from immediate vicinity of his tongue (not being facetious here!)

Yes and they sniff other dogs bottoms and their wee on the pavement - no dogs nose is coming anywhere near me! vile.

what about all those doting dog-owners who 'kiss' their pooches?

erm - i've taken to showing the dog my cheek if they want to lick, or say no no face quite firm and push them away/ failing that I get them to sit in from of me and I cuddle then so we bond that way.

As a cairn is so small I can't see how you would have trouble keeping it away from your face tbh. Just put him down on the floor when he starts licking you and he will soon get the message.

My friend has a huge boxer cross and it is almost impossible to stop him slobbering all over you as soon as you sit down. He jumped up and licked my mouth when I was standing up the other day, it was vile!

When our puppy tries to lick our faces we say a loud NO & put our hand in between his face & ours.

Then we ignore him for a few seconds & he stops. hasn't done it for ages.
