To ask you to sign this petition in Charlie's memory?

(60 Posts)

I know some of you have followed Charlie Beard-Harris's story He sadly lost his battle against leukaemia on Friday.

His family have set up a Petition to Increase Awareness and Availability of Umbilical Cord Donation

It has reached 16,000 signatures, which means the government have to give them a response. Another 84,000 signatures would mean the government have to debate it.

WIBU to ask you all to sign it please?

AhsataN Sun 10-Feb-13 19:53:37

Done, im gutted for them all and his big sister sad

IvorHughJangova Sun 10-Feb-13 20:07:31

Signed. I thought about starting this too but something told me it wouldn't be allowed to stand? Not sure why and could be wrong. I followed him on Facebook and feel absolutely awful for his family, it's so sad.

Really TheBody. Why? I hope I'm not breaking any rules MNHQ, but please let this stand.

Thanks all for signing thanks

thebody Sun 10-Feb-13 20:08:06

Sparkling, they did mine but hope they don't this one.

thebody Sun 10-Feb-13 20:09:30

A truth. Sorry no think its brilliant you started this. Well done and hope it stays as a great cause.

All done x

Don't worry TheBody, I know you weren't suggesting it should go. The Twitter and Facebook campaigns are doing brilliantly so hopefully it will stay here, but if it doesn't the message will keep spreading elsewhere.

Signed.

MariusEarlobe Sun 10-Feb-13 20:21:50

They took dds cord as part of a trial 10 years ago. Not sure why its not moved on in 10 years.

5madthings Sun 10-Feb-13 20:23:35

Done

Signed. I desperately wanted to donate the cord from my children, but most midwives I encountered didn't know what I meant. sad

I know. I genuinely can't believe there are so few hospitals in the uk that can do it (just six I think)

signed

Signed & shared- poor wee boy, & his family sad .

btw, i think there might be a topic specifically for petions- i'll just check.

i couldn't find it on the main talk board, but by sheer luck i had a thread that had been moved there on my "threads i'm on" list, here we go-

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/petitions_noticeboard

BattlingFanjos Sun 10-Feb-13 21:10:13

Signed and shared on Facebook. I actually asked about this when my DS was born, after reading something that left an impact and knowing nothing about it. I was brushed off sad if I'd have looked into it more I would have pushed for information

Thanks all. Let's try to keep it here shall we? Much more traffic grin

thebody Sun 10-Feb-13 21:18:23

Wonder why more isn't known about this?

thebody Sun 10-Feb-13 21:19:05

Soz posted too soon, would have gladly given mine.

I think because it is only available at so few places sad

If I'm ever lucky enough to have DC2, I'd seriously try to get my antenatal care at one of the hospitals that offer it so that I could donate cord blood.

giraffesCantEatNHSPotatoes Sun 10-Feb-13 21:38:06

Aillidh, expats dd had her bone marrow transplant from cord blood.

AML is a bastard!

I signed a few days ago.

I know Glittery. I was just trying to write something to keep us in active convos grin

For those of you wanting more info:

Charlie's Cords for Life FB page
Anthony Nolan info about cord donation

Looks like the only hospital's currently accepting cord blood donations in England are Birmingham Women’s Hospital, King’s College Hospital or The Royal Free Hospital in London, the Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital. Not enough sad

CatherineMumsnet (MNHQ) Sun 10-Feb-13 21:42:53

Hi all, whilst we appreciate this is a really good cause, we're afraid we don't allow petition threads on the boards so we're going to have to delete this.

Hospital's? OMG. Hospitals. Sorry.

Can you move it to the petitions page that Glittery linked to instead of deleting? Pretty please?

LineRunner Sun 10-Feb-13 21:45:54

OP you can do a thread to raise awareness by naming those hospitals.

Thanks LineRunner. I'll do that after this one goes poof.

Signed

Oh, just saw you moved it instead. Thank you thanks

oh, right, ATruth i thought you thought i was moaning to get it moved blush

can anyone find this section on the talk page, btw, cos i still can't? confused

Ah god, I'm in tears, he was from my town. We've been praying for him for years and following his tragic story through the local paper, so desperately sad sad

signed and bumping

namechangecity Sun 10-Feb-13 22:08:24

just put on my facebook page - if we all did this I am sure we would hit target in no time

giraffesCantEatNHSPotatoes Sun 10-Feb-13 22:09:12

Although I think cord blood can take longer to engraft so worth a reminder to join bone marrow register too!

just a thought, ATruth - why don't you start a thread in chat with a link to this thread? more traffic there, so more potential signers!
