Why on EARTH do they keep the poor creatures alive while they're doing it?! Better dead than going through that.

whistlestopcafe Thu 22-Nov-12 22:11:53

I don't want to view the link. Where did this happen and why?

southeastastra Thu 22-Nov-12 22:13:33

i saw something similar years ago about cat- people don't really care about animals so much anymore

missymoomoomee Thu 22-Nov-12 22:15:14

They are using the fur of a cross breed to make fake Ugg boots out in China. They are skinning the poor dogs alive and then leaving them to die sad

didnt click as i have seen similar before and will never get it out my mind

D0oinMeCleanin Thu 22-Nov-12 22:16:09

The first link is just the petition and some photos. The video is at the bottom and only comes on if you click it.

It happened in China and it's make counterfeit Ugg boots.

I saw and signed a while ago.

Firmly, they can't damage the fur by shooting or using bolt guns and euthanasia by injection is too expensive. A lot of animals used for fur are killed this way, to minimise damage to the pelt.

Signed. horrific, not watched the video.

gaelicsheep Thu 22-Nov-12 22:18:00

I don't want the gory details, but where is this happening and what on earth for? Is it a petition that's going to do any good?

thenightsky Thu 22-Nov-12 22:20:36

OP, could you ask for this to be moved to the doghouse where it will get more viewings?

Signed.

Flatbread Thu 22-Nov-12 22:21:02

Omg! I just signed the petition. The poor, poor dogs sad How can anyone do this? Do they lack all humanity?

SoleSource Thu 22-Nov-12 22:21:27

No. no no no no no no no no

Cannot watch

Pure evil

Signed

gaelicsheep Thu 22-Nov-12 22:22:31

OK I see it's China. It is horrific but what is the petition going to achieve? It's China, no one in any position of power is going to upset them and their treatment of animals couldn't be more well known. Unless the Chinese themselves change, nothing else will. So how will a petition help?

McTagster Thu 22-Nov-12 22:23:55

Couldn't bring myself to watch the video, but signed. Those poor animals sad

Solo Thu 22-Nov-12 22:40:49

I am a hard cow and I couldn't watch the video.

There is no excuse for cruelty.

I've signed and shared on fb.

Solo Thu 22-Nov-12 22:43:21

Korea is also a country that cage dogs and then kill them slowly and painfully for meat. The more painful their death, the tastier the meat hmm. Been going on for a very long time. sad

missymoomoomee Thu 22-Nov-12 23:02:31

Just giving this a little bumpity bump back to the top of the page.

ReeBee Thu 22-Nov-12 23:11:53

Signed, but also can't watch.

Although this is a vile and evil practice, I'm completely baffled by the petition, since it openly says that both the UK and EU have banned the trade and sale of cat or dog fur. If this fur is then getting through, what is needed is for existing laws to be enforced and a petition won't make much difference to that since the enforcing body would be local Trading Standards. Also, these petition websites are often a good way for organisations to "harvest" contact details for potential supporters.

chickydoo Thu 22-Nov-12 23:22:14

Didn't watch, but can only imagine the horror.

Nancy66 Thu 22-Nov-12 23:22:43

The petition is well meaning but utterly pointless - it's China - a country where human rights mean nothing, let alone animal ones

Flatbread Thu 22-Nov-12 23:26:08

Good point, Scuttle. So what can we do? A petition to trading standards or some EU office of trade, perhaps?

tuckingfits Fri 23-Nov-12 01:38:18

Signed & shared. Horrendous.

missymoomoomee Fri 23-Nov-12 01:50:07

The petition, as I read it, is about getting something done about this fur being imported so they have no market.

These animals are not dogs, so there is no legislative reason why boots containing the fur cannot be imported into the UK. There are also many problems with the labelling of fur products, so many consumers will not be aware of where the fur in their boots comes from

This is an extract from the petition.

millimurphy Fri 23-Nov-12 06:37:08

Happens to cows as well when they haven't been stunned properly at the abbatoir. I suppose dogs are a version of cattle in some countries. Not right either way.

AlienRefluxLooksLikeSnow Fri 23-Nov-12 06:54:46

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe Fri 23-Nov-12 09:21:57

Please don't watch any videos about this, you can't 'unsee' the footage.

AvonCallingBarksdale Fri 23-Nov-12 09:27:54

To whoever said people are more bothered with party threads, please don't think that's true sad. I won't click on the link, sounds too awful for words. I really, really don't like dogs at all, but I abhor any sort of cruelty to animals. In a country which already has a terrible human rights record, sadly this sort of thing doesn't surprise me.

Signed in the hope it might achieve something.

cloudpuff Fri 23-Nov-12 09:38:02

I'm not a dog lover but would not want to see any treated in such an awful way. Its disgusting what happens to some animals around the world.

herethereandeverywhere Fri 23-Nov-12 09:38:43

Any creature being skinned alive is horrific.

But (to ensure this thread doesn't look uninformed) those animals are not dogs - although a relative of the wolf and are certainly not domestic dogs or cross-breeds. They are a wild animal known as the raccoon dog which had been hunted and bred for its fur for many years in Asia (where it is native) and the Soviet Union.

GrimmaTheNome Fri 23-Nov-12 09:39:02

>OP, could you ask for this to be moved to the doghouse where it will get more viewings?

have you put a link to this thread in the current Ugg boot thread? (I mentioned the issue there but didn't read the whole thread.)

If people didn't buy stuff with real fur then china would have no market.

GrimmaTheNome Fri 23-Nov-12 09:40:47

>those animals are not dogs
that doesn't make any ethical difference - I'm sure you didn't mean to imply in any way that it did, just clarifying.

Tailtwister Fri 23-Nov-12 09:41:51

I couldn't watch the video or read about it. Just the thought makes me feel physically sick.

I have signed.

Alisvolatpropiis Fri 23-Nov-12 10:18:40

I believe I have seen this video before or at least one very similar,a few years ago when they were first(?) trying to raise awareness.

It was horrifying. I couldn't watch it again.

I signed the petition. To everyone saying there's no point it will achieve nothing, you are aware that there are laws about counterfeit good don't you?

I really don't think it matters that these animals aren't Labradors...they're being skinned alive. But it's okay because they're not dogs hmm

OrangeKat Fri 23-Nov-12 10:49:54

Signed and shared. The photo was horrendous enough to make me well up, I don't think I can watch the link. sad

Don't buy fake Uggs. Don't buy fur from China. Actually, don't buy Uggs as they are made in China so who knows what the sheep involved have gone through.

Alisvolatpropiis Fri 23-Nov-12 11:02:46

Orange I've seen it before I think. It was horrendous. I cried. I am not a crier generally speaking.

I'll click on when my DD is out of the room.
I'm not a dog lover (by any means) but I have been a vegetarian for 32 years of my life (I'm 46 now)

The trouble is with these sort of videos is people are too horrified to watch (you can't unsee it ) or they say "Oh I couldn't bear to watch it" (Well not watching it doesn't mean it doesn't happen).
Or ,IME I get 'numb' I have seen so many horrific videos (especially in my early vegetarian days when I was horrified into becoming a vegetarian).

Pedallleur Fri 23-Nov-12 11:32:56

So what are you doing about shark fishing where the fins are sliced off and the animal put back in the sea to drown? Dogs are a commodity in China. Child labour, dog-skinning, shark fishing it all comes down to money/exploitation

MrsWolowitz Fri 23-Nov-12 11:39:10

Ped what a silly post.

If everyone thought like that then nothing would be done about anything.

If everyone was compelled to take action about something that's moved them then the world would be a much better place. The OP is trying to raise awareness about this issue, it doesn't mean that she doesn't care about anything else.

I can't stand dogs personally, but Jesus, cruelty to any animal is unacceptable. Even human life is very cheap in many parts of the world. SO very sad. sad

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 23-Nov-12 13:34:35

Hi all, we are going to move this to our petitions topic now.
Please do keep it bumped.

Signed.

Why is pain neccessary to the process? Vile, vile practice angry My heart breaks when I realise just how much pain and fear we as a species cause animals all the time.

Going to go home and hug my dog really really tight tonight.

Vajazzler Fri 23-Nov-12 16:53:11

This has been on my mind all day sad

I'm not completely naive and understand these animals are farmed for this process etc and i've watched that programme called 'kill it cook it eat it' to try and educate myself about about how the meat we buy is produced etc.

Why cant these animals be stunned before hand? Surely a simple method like that would be more humane for them?

strumpetpumpkin Fri 23-Nov-12 16:56:02

im not sure the chinese government are about to start giving a shit about animal rights any time soon, when they barely grasp the concept of human ones, no matter how many petitions people sign

hellymelly Fri 23-Nov-12 16:57:28

I've signed. Horrific.

Alisvolatpropiis Fri 23-Nov-12 16:59:13

strumpet maybe not, they barely care about Chinese people. But the petition could stop them being sold in the UK,so it is worth signing.

KinkyDorito Fri 23-Nov-12 17:20:41

Me too Vajazzler. They won't stun because of cost?

QOD Fri 23-Nov-12 17:33:39
