To think the high heels petition is not as important as this issue.. TRIGGER WARNING [Title edited by MNHQ]

UN soldiers have been raping and sexually abusing children, and I have not come across much about it in the mainstream media. One girl was forced to have sex with a dog...one girl died as a result of injuries from the abuse...

This hasn't captured people's attention as much..and I guess maybe because it is so sensitive it is harder to people to share and talk about, but that's really letting vulnerable children down so I wanted to post this here.

Anyone got any ideas why this issue doesn't get the attention it deserves? Genuine question, would like to open a debate.

Also I'm asking please will you sign to demand accountability?

137k signatures for the high heels petition and 7k for this one.

You won't be spammed, you just get one confirmation email and that's it.

I think you need a trigger warning in your title

I'd like to read more about the facts of the allegations and of course it's not acceptable and should be investigated and prosecuted

It's the rape and sexual abuse of women and girls though - it's never really seen as overly important or even news worth - especially in war - sadly

I thought putting "TW" would be enough but will report to MN so they can amend if necessary.

There is quite a lot of information on the link to petition.

There's already a thread with a link to the petition on somewhere (feminism?)
Not a criticism at all, it can't have too much publicity. Just wanted to let you know that people do care .

I really didn't want to know graphic details. That's left me quite shaken. I don't normally buy into trigger warnings but this thread really needs one.

WhatdoIget

I saw that thread on feminism, thought I would try and get some more attention on here as there didn't seem to be much interest.

TW not as obvious as I thought then! I have asked MN to amend if needed.

Thanks to those who have signed.

I agree that in general this kind of story isnt going to be very newsworthy..especially as the victims arent white and British.

As an aside, the UK is one of the founding members of the UN and our money goes towards funding their activities so maybe we have even more responsibility as Brits to demand a response. I mean that in addition to the outrage felt on a human level.

Rachel weiss was in this film about the UN

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Whistleblower

"inspired by the story of Kathryn Bolkovac, a Nebraska police officer who was recruited as a United Nations peacekeeper for DynCorp International in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1999. While there, she discovered a sex trafficking ring serving (and facilitated by) DynCorp employees, with the UN's SFOR peacekeeping force turning a blind eye. Bolkovac was fired and forced out of the country after attempting to shut down the ring. She took the story to BBC News in England and won a wrongful-dismissal lawsuit against DynCorp"

Signed, but please, that TW needs to go further about the nature of the content.

For personal reasons, reading the opening of the first post has caused me some distress. I'm off MN for the night.

Yes, I've read Kathryn Bolkovac's book. The powers that be just let UN Peacekeeping personnel of all types exploit kidnapped women and girls with impunity in the former Yugoslavia, as they still do in many other places.

Report
venusinscorpio · 17/05/2016 21:57

And when I say exploit, obviously I mean abuse and rape, and profit from other men abusing and raping them in many cases.
