Just that really. The largest estate agent in our area produces a newspaper style brochure. They've dedicated a full page spread to these few words,

distinctive homes...........it's our speciality

DH insists that although it looks and sounds incorrect it is actually permissible. I disagree. Can you settle this for us please.

I suppose if you have only one speciality, then you have to say "it's" rather than "they're", which I'm assuming is your issue? Tricky. I agree it sounds a bit strange.

homes is plural, distinctive is the adjective, hence they're is correct.

Yes that's it AMumInScotlandAMumInScotland. I would say

distinctive homes...........our speciality

or

distinctive homes...........they're our speciality

I think all of the above sound naff btw. grin

How do you like your new double barreled name AMum?

Miggsie Fri 20-Nov-09 14:07:18

SELLING distinctive homes...that's our speciality

OR

disnctinctive homes...our speciality

Although, it should be

distinctive homes: a speciality

and NOT ........................

Frankly, I think it sounds pretty naff in any version, but then advertising slogans are not exactly known for their high standard of English!

(And I love my new extra-long name grin)

If it was an action that was singular - such as "Finding" or "Selling" (as Miggsie said) distinctive homes, then it's would be fine.

But as it is, it is plural, so should be 'they're'.

Also agree that ....... is not correct, and should be :
