Why do these not get capital letters? Or do they ?
When put into sentences e.g.
In summer, I go to the beach.
or
In Summer, I go to the beach.
Is Summer a proper noun?
Also is it....
The Earth is round.
or
The earth is round ?

Seasons don't get capitals unless, for example, they are part of a "name" (Summer Olympics etc)

Earth gets capitals when it is used as the name for the rock we are on. If it is qualified in any way, "all the people on the earth" it doesn't.

Personally I don't like the logic of that, it confuses my kids no end, but who am I to argue with the rules!

Thank you.

No, seasons are not proper nouns! Proper nouns are names: Edinburgh, James, Jupiter.

Seasons are only proper nouns when part of a wider title, such as the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The Earth is a proper noun when used to refer to the planet: The Earth is millions of light years from Venus [for example]

[I am digging in the] earth is just a noun, so no cap required.

No. They are generic nouns. Otherwise, using your confused logic, you would have to also write Chair, House, Shoes, etc Smile

It's weird what gets stuck in your logic, isn't it?

Your thread made me doubt North, South, East and West... OK, I really do know the answer, but doubt crept in. Same rules apply, obviously. But I had started to give them excuses to be proper nounsSmile
