ect or etc

I have always used etc as short for et cetera

I've noticed on mumsnet and other forums that people use 'ect'.

Is this an acknowledged alternative to etc?

No. It is a spelling mistake.

I suppose it wouldn't surprise me if my iphone were to autocorrect to something random!

I thought that was the case but I see it so often I really started to wonder if it was a new and accepted version

And just checked my iphone and it doesn't autocorrect etc!

I see lots of people posting except instead of accept, of instead of have and off instead of of. Ect is just another example of people writing as they speak and declining standards too probably

Personally it drives me crackers but I'm too polite to pull someone up on it when I can understand the gist of the post.

depends whether your phone's got chavcorrect or not Wink

Mine does all kinds of random incorrections. Can only assume that my vocab and syntax are better than that of the iphone Grin

Dahn saf, where I grew up it's often pronounced as a single word: eck-set-er-rah or eck-tet-er-ah.

It makes me stabby.
