oops read 'hose birthday cake' and thought how weird and boring, surely it will look like a crap snake

I did one for dd that was the same idea as southeasts second link. Did it in a big rectangular tin and sort of sculpted the shape of a horse's head out of the cooked sponge. (sounds a bit Godfather when I say it like that). Used ready to roll icing (in pink of course) to cover up and sweets for bridle and mane. Have a photo but unfortunately it was in pre-digital camera days! Wasn't too difficult, iirc, and looked pretty damn fine even if I do say so myself.

alternatively make a standard cake and decorate with playmobil or similar

Could alternatively do an ordinary sponge, cover it in green butter icing and strategically placed sugar flowers and get plastic horses from a farm set to 'graze' on the top...

Thanks everyone....did the 'place the horses on the field' last year so will brave the 'sculpt a horses head' I think. Also means it can be one layer which makes things easier.

Uploading photos on here is more of a challenge than the cake! I'll do my best. Things we do for our little ones!
