Mix CD for Baby Naming Ceremony - anyone got any ideas for songs to include?

Anyone got any ideas for songs to include on a mix CD I'm making to play at dd's naming ceremony next month - happy, positive vibes wanted to set a nice mood.
So far got things like 'Dont worry Be Happy' and 'Here comes the Sun', James Blunt's 'Beautiful' etc
Need a funky alternative to bland elevator music! Would be very grateful for any more suggestions please.

We had What A Wonderful World, Where IS The Love, Search for The Hero, and Sweet child Of mine (!!) but ds1 was playing with the keyboard and we ended up having Guns N Roses Mr Brownstone blasting during the vows (Blush.

Oops.

How about "Close to you" by the Carpenters? Nice and cheesy but sweet for a christening of a little girl.

My girl?

Thanks for these ....

I think 'close to you' is a tad too cheesy for my taste! But my girl is a good idea Kbear. Have got 'lollipop' by the chordettes (from the film stand by me). Also got wonderful world.

Hmmm she has blue eyes at the moment and not likely to be brown - but thanksfor suggestion!

there's a John Denver song that may be not at all your taste but I heard it on the radio when my DS was very young and it had tears running down my face at how appropriate the words are to how you feel about your child...trouble is can't remember the title but the lyrics go something like:

I'll walk in the rain by your side
I'll cling to the warmth of your hand
I'll do anything to keep you satisfied
and I'll love you more than anybody can

And the wind will whisper your name to me
Little birds will sing along in time
leaves will bow down when you walk past
and morning bells will chime

If this is way off the top of the cheese-ometer, then I apologise and shall get my coat. I blame the hormones, but every word rang true with me for how I feel about my son and it had me a sobbing wreck!

If you do like it I'm sure it'll be on any JD compilation best of thingy. I'll get my coat now, just in case......

I Hope you Dance by Lee Ann Womack?

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat, but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance

Chorus: And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance,
I hope you dance (dance), I hope you dance (dance)

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin’ might mean takin’ chances, if they're worth takin’
Lovin’ might be a mistake but it's worth makin’
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out, reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance

Etc.!

thanks everbody for replying - keep em coming!

i know (and like) sunshine on my shoulder by john denver, so am already quite cheesesque - i will check out that one sparkle - words are certainly nice!

chonky never heard of hope you dance either but will search i-tunes tonight - defo like lyrics.

also thought of (in case anyone's interested) 'the whole of the moon' by the waterboys

would love more indie type tracks but they're normally quite miserable or undecipherable!

Power of Two by the Indigo Girls - one of the best happiest songs ever - it's a love song but with lovely lyrics that could apply to a child, the chorus goes:

It's okay, it's fine
baby I'm here to stop your crying
chase all the ghosts from your head
I'm stronger than the monsters beneath your bed
Smarter than the tricks played on your heart
Look at them together and we'll take them apart
Adding up a total of a love that's true,
Multiply life by the power of two

I'm going to have to get the itunes things sorted out - want to look up chonky's lee ann womack track!

Forever Young by Bob Dylan. Ace lyrics for a child.

Report
Tinker · 07/03/2006 15:18

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

How about the Muse version of "Can't take my eyes off you" very mad thrashy chorus!

Sparklemagic · 07/03/2006 17:17

bumble, I've checked out the John Denver song and it's called 'For baby (for Bobbie)' so obviously written for his child - quite apt!

Some lovely ideas on here, wish I'd had a naming ceremony for DS now!

I don't know whether Tinker's song might come a cropper though if you're having a formal register office thing though as I think they won't have anything that has mention of god in it!! This is certainly true for weddings, don't know for naming ceremonies but wouldn't be surprised.

Good luck and don't forget to let us know how it goes!!

it's on hunkydory

Will you stay in our lovers? story
If you stay you won?t be sorry
?cause we believe in you
Soon you?ll grow so take a chance
With a couple of kooks
Hung up on romancing

Will you stay in our lovers? story
If you stay you won?t be sorry
?cause we believe in you
Soon you?ll grow so take a chance
With a couple of kooks
Hung up on romancing

We bought a lot of things to keep you warm and dry
And a funny old crib on which the paint won?t dry
I bought you a pair of shoes
A trumpet you can blow
And a book of rules
On what to say to people when they pick on you
?cause if you stay with us you?re gonna be pretty kookie too

Will you stay in my lovers? story
If you stay you won?t be sorry
?cause we believe in you
Soon you?ll grow so take a chance
With a couple of kooks
Hung up on romancing

And if you ever have to go to school
Remember how they messed up this old fool
Don?t pick fights with the bullies or the cads
?cause I?m not much cop at punching
Other people?s dads
And if the homework brings you down
Then we?ll throw it on the fire
And take the car downtown

Will you stay in our lovers? story
If you stay you won?t be sorry
?cause we believe in you
Soon you?ll grow so take a chance
With a couple of kooks
Hung up on romancing

Will you stay in our lovers? story
If you stay you won?t be sorry
?cause we believe in you
Soon you?ll grow so take a chance
With a couple of kooks
Hung up on romancing

Will you stay

sparklemagic - thanks I will be able to find the JD song easily now - what a sweet title!

I know what you mean about the religious references - god is indeed banned from attending civil ceremonies Grin. We had this at our wedding - they wouldn't let us have bit about marriage from 'the prophet' which is really meaningful, even though the word 'god' could easily be replaced by something else without the sense being altered.

The registrar wouldnt let us have so much as the tune of a hymn without the words (as people will say the words in their heads and therefore religion has snuck in!). I guess I'd better run my mix-CD by the registrar before the event and listen most carefully to all of my songs!

Namings are really nice though - we have chosen some lovely promises to make to dd, and for the grandparents and supporting adults.
