We are going to a 3 year olds birthday party at a really posh hotel on Halloween (don't ask! The parties around here are mad!). I have bought ds1 a pirates costume at the Disney store as he is mad on pirates anyway and will get loads of dressing up use from it. But ds1 is only 16 months and I did not want to spend a lot on a costume for him. I found one in Marks today that is really cute and was not too expensive. It is a reindeer. I bought is as I thought he could also wear it at Christmas.

Now, what I need help with is this... What do I reply to all the posh mums when they ask me if my son is wearing a reindeer costume for Halloween? I thought I could tell them he is Roduolph's evil twin, but that is all I could htink of.

Any witty suggestions????

Well I think it is madness to feel that you have to keep up with the Joneses like this but.....

How about an short incredulous yet patronising laugh followed by a
'Do you really not know????'

Most will drop out at this point but if anyone persists, laugh again and say
'Well,I can't be the one to tell you'
and stroll away.

They will be left feeling paranoid and under educated.

how about 'because he likes it' and leave it at that. why should you justify your decision?

its a birthday party not a hallowe'en party surely? anyway what;s a pirate got to do with hallowe'en anyway?

and no "do you really not know"???

I know I shouldn't have to justify it, but would love to have something witty to say! They all think I am a weird hippy women anyway! They probably expect me to bring him in something weird!

He's on a student exchange program, Hade's Guardian Dog from Hell is pulling the sleigh this Christmas, and Rudolph is doing Halloween and a bit of security work for Old Nick (as oppsed to St Nick).

How about a character from NIghtmare Before Xmas?

(Whole thing sounds mad to me BTW!)

Add a cheap devil's tail and horns from somewhere and go with Rudolph's evil twin.

I once dressed DS2 up in a shortened plastic vampire cape, white shirt, sewed red horns to a red hooded top and a devil tail to his grey trousers and sent him to a halloween party as Spawn of the Devil (he was 7 months old and being a "challenge" at the time!)
