Radio stations suitable for 8 year old

DC(8) has been given CD/ DAB radio for Xmas. Would like to preset 5 radio stations but as I mostly listen to radio 4 have no idea what other stations would be suitable.

DC quite keen to listen to chart songs but I had a quick listen to Radio 1 and thought that some of the in between song chat was a bit too grown up for him (lots of references tto relationships/ sex etc).

Am I just an old fuddy duddy? What do others suggest. Of course realise that DC will work out how to tune but thought that giving a few pointers might get things off on a sensible footing.

Radio 7 in the morning is cbbc radio and they have stories and stuff. There are quite a few progrmmes for kids actaully.

FWIW my ds who is nearly 7 listens to the commedy hour on radio 4 at 6:30 every weekday evening and loves most of it.

they sometimes have kids book readings on one of the BBC digital channels, I forget which now, poss BBC 7, also I think there may be a CBBC radio channel. Try their ws. And good luck, I think radio an excellent underused medium, aim to wean him onto R4 eventually!

Thanks for these suggestions. Can anyone suggest some good music stations that would play current pop but without too much potentially unsuitable chit chat.

agree with progs on bbc7

you could also try fun radio - possibly a bit babyish but has some pop stuff i think and i would feel comfortable leaving it on

am afraid all other stations all seem to have grown up news which i often turn down for ny 4 and 9 year olds

i was going to ask the exact same question! I'm not sure I want my 8 year old listening to Chris Moyles.

on the radio 7 site, it seems to be CBeebies rather than CBBC in the mornings. Shame, cos I don't think my 8 year old would be up for that.

Plus I'm thinking that if he gets listening to a story or soemthing, he'll be even more difficult to get out of the house! Needs to be music.

I agree about the news although something that just has headlines is probably ok.

Longer reports can be a bit of a minefield e.g. Radio 4 for has some extremely graphic reports including detailed descriptions of rape and torture which I sometimes think are unneccessary even for adults. But I think its unlikely that DC will tune into that as has more of an interest in Hip Hop/ rap etc .

I think Cbeebies is a bit young for him these days. What I need is something like Radio 1 of my youth with Dave Lee Travis & Noel Edmonds - cheesy but great for an 8 year old.

my 10 year old loves his radio and has done for 3 years now. he has radio5 as obsessesd with sport and likes heart 106.02 (london/south east) as well as local station

our local station is good, and one of the regular djs is a friend of ours so hearing him is quite entertaining. local stations usually have a good mix of music and banter too.
I listen to Smooth radio- if you can manage to ignore the horrible ad jingles they have friendly presenters and play a very wide range of music! it makes me laugh when I hear my dd1 singing along to David Bowie, Elvis or the Noisettes.
