How do you get a 4yo to laugh without -

  • physical contact or dancing around like a prat?

I have decided humour is best way to coax ds 4yo out of his sulks, but I'm not very good at it. Tickling does not work, and I don't want to stand on my head with pencils in my nose.

Any other ideas? Silly little rhymes I could learn, other daftness?

How about 'the look' that says with a twinkle in your eye.....ideally accompanied by making your nose move / flaring your nostrils for extra comic effect?

And you could make your own silly song to a familiar tune about how much you love her and sing it loudly and theatrically while chasing her.....??

Can you just say or do something very daft?
That would work with my 3.5yr old.
If he was in a grump about getting dressed and I said 'right i'm gonna wear your socks now, look' and put them on my hands, then look all surprised about getting it wrong and 9 times out of 10 he'll laugh and want them on his hands too, then be happy to get dressed etc.

DS (5) manages to cheer DD (3) up by saying underpants. Works 9 times out of 10

Or shout 'bum bum fart' as loudly as you can.

Substitute the word 'poo' for any other in a nursery rhyme (twinkle twinkle little poo etc). Works every time with DS

I love my girlie twirlie wirlie
I love my girlie twirlie wirlie woo
I love my girlie twirlie wirlie
I love my girlie twirlie wirlie woo

Twirlie wirlie woo, twirlie wirlie woo (sang in a normal voice)
I love my girlie twirlie wirlie woo (high voice) twirlie woo (low voice)

I love my girlie twirlie wirlie woo

.... and other such nonsense!
