toddler son with fishy smell in nappy? Any ideas?

My son (2 next month) has been settling in at nursery these past 2 weeks and hasn't eaten a great deal because he has been a little nervous...Was getting him ready just now and was hit by overwhelming smell of fish from his (wet) nappy! Everything looks ok, no rash. Do you think it could be to do with not eating much? Has anyone ever experienced this? I think it is his urine that smells, as opposed to him passing wind.

Hi Citybranch he could have a kidney infection. DD had one last year and it was one of the things I said to the doctor, she had very few symptoms but her appetite was not as good and she just didn't seem right. No temp or anything.

hi city - i would second the possibility of a urinary tract or kidney infection. my daughter has kidney troubles and the specialist told us fishy smelling nappies were a sign of infection so i would take him to the doctor. prob just need a dose of antibiotics. good luck

totally agree. sounds like a urinary infection (my daughter has had 2 this age). Often quite hard to diagnose on account of non-specific symptoms but fishy wee is definitely an indicator of something up. Take him to docs...it's unlikely to get better on its own.
