Does anyone make fancy dress costumes?

I just wondered whether anyone makes fancy dress anymore or is DS going to be scarred and resent me for life if I make him make his own costumes!!

I make all of ours - love it.

I'm making them this year - although when I asked ds if it would go down well with his friends he said "the teachers will like it!"

i am about to attempt a blue dinosaur for ds1! first time I have done it though, so we'll see

don't like bought ones verymuch.You can find great stuff in charity shops as a starting point. I have made a tin man , a csi and a fairy godmother costume this week.

I make some of ours. the best thing I ever made was a black cloak with a hood. It was used for lots of different costumes and has just finished it's life when I cut it up to make a jerkin for DS to wear to a Tudor day at Kentwell.

I must admit to being a bit when a supermarket creation wins best costume at the school's Halloween disco.

When I say "make" I do as little sewing as possible and instead "construct" things out of charity shop finds, old clothes, double sided sticky tape etc and the odd few very large stictches!

My finest moments so far have been Medusa, with lots of lovingly coloured in snakes - and Little Dead Riding Hood!

mmm, pumpkin might be difficult. I'm thinking maybe green tights / top then an oversized orange tunic with elastic round the bottom and under the armpits and stuffed into a round shape (think big stuffed orange boob tube!). Then black face stuck on it??

It was fancy dress at playgroup today - the three prizes went to the three most expensive supermarket outfits, well I suppose they were the best costumes.

DS and I made his costume so it wasn't good (well he is only 2!)we had fun though.

I do - AND I GET BOY TO HELP.
He has an all purpose black tabard ( fun fur) to which we add
sheep mask = black sheep
8 ribbon legs and paper cut out shoes = spider
tail and cat mask = cat.
I recon it'll do shepard as well once he gets to nativity play stage with a belt and a Tea towel on his head.
I like doing masks as I get him to colour them in or stick stuff on them. spiders shoes were his idea and he coloured them in.
Hes Not bothered about prizes yet as hes only 2.5.

Any suggestions on either how make a cow costume for a 4 year old's nativity play or where I might buy one cheaply...it's only going to be used the once.

White long sleeved t-shirt and white leggings (thermals from M&S?) with black felt patches sewn on? Face paint. Sorted.

Oh and don't forget the tail. Maybe a white knee sock, stuffed a little bit, with some black wool tied to the end?

Brown material made into a sack shape, with head hole. Pink marigold blown up ties and attatched to front of material. Make a few white patches out of old pillow case and sew/stick them on.Make tail out of brown material and fray end.
