Has anyone ever sucked snot out of their child's nose?

I don't mean with a little sucky dealibob from the chemist, I mean with your mouth.

I know some people do.

I am feeling so sorry for ds at the moment, he is so snotty and struggling to feed. I was tempted to try it last night but didn't as I didn't know if it could be dangerous (visions of accidentally sucking my baby's lungs up through his nose, or depriving him of oxygen or something).

Dear god, no way! Not because I know it to be dangerous though. Hope your Ds is less congested soon!

I have done it

didn't think that I could cause any damage

Just couldn't see the poor wee thing so stuffed up anymore

Yes, I did this when DS was teeny and had a very stuffed nose. He and I hadn't slept for days and it was an act of sheer desperation on my part.

I wouldn't do it now, the PFB behaviour is long gone.

Funily enough, no!

But then maybe Iv'e been lucky my tiny babies didn't have colds.

I've picked a lot of dried snot off nostrils, though.

yup

works well

you dont get mucus in your mouth - it is caught by the chamber in the contraption

Doesn't sound too appealing! Take him into the bathroom and turn it into a steam room with a very hot running shower (obviously keep him away from the water). Sit in the steam with him for 15 mins or so. It should help loosen up his nose. Can you put a pillow under his cot mattress so that it is slightly tilted when he sleeps (encouraging drainage)

And apply some Olbas oil to a tissue and then place it beneath his cot sheet where it can't touch him but he can breath in the fumes.

oh - just read it properly - no contraption....

dont know how you could...weould use saline in that case

Report
S1ur · 24/09/2008 21:29

Oh thank goodness there is a contraption involved? Phew so not just let me give you a kiss and eat you snot then.

I'll be honest, I even sort of tried (like Trinity - there's only so long you can watch your little baby stuffed up and crying and hungry and tired). I didn't get very far, but was a bit half hearted about it.

Any tips Trinity?

lol @ grossing everyone out.

It's standard practice in some communities y'know .

I did it, I was encouraged by my dd's Jamaican grandmother and it's common practice to her. My dd was a tiny baby and I was desperate, it worked too.
Are people really horrified by a tiny bit of snot from their own child!!
Another thing I did was putting Vicks in a bowl of hot water under the cot.

My DS had snot sucked from his nose whilst in hospital, they used a special sucker(amazing how much came out!). Nurse or doc told me that mothercare sell a similar product that sucks snot from their noses.

Never sucked it out myself tho.

Yes, and with no contraption.

Far more distressing to the child to pin them down and try and poke a ridiculous device up their nose.

It's only snot for goodness sakes.

I had a sucker for dd when she was little. Didn't do a brilliant job.

Right. If ds is all snotty tonight I shall snot suck and report back .

dd2 used to get quite congested (she had several chest infections) I mentioned to her paeditrician that I used a sucker thing to clear her nose and he said not too as it encourages more snot to build up. He recommended using saline drops and chest rub to help her breathe easier.
