PARENTS OF TODDLERS - what have your children been tantrumming about so far this morning?

theSuburbanDryad · 08/07/2008 08:18

So far we've had one minor meltdown because I wouldn't let him eat the wipes. One minor meltdown because I wouldn't let him play with my phone (he has his own that he can play with - a replica one, like they have in phone shops - but that wasn't good enough) but today's major meltdown was because I wouldn't let him get into the fridge.

I mean, just, WTF?!?!?!?!

Am i the only one who has a toddler in a vile mood this morning then? (i've packed him off to nursery now though - they can deal with him )

DS was in fab mood at 6:25 when he got up. Random hysterical tears because DH wouldn't let him take a Next Directory delivery note to nursery.

You know when you just think, well if it is that important to you, you just had to say and I'd let you take it but now you are hysterical and I've said no, I can't back down.

He then stopped and started singing again.

Five minutes later, meltdown due to teeth brushing.

Five minutes later, 'Twinkle, twinkle, little star...'

It is like living with Jack Nicholson from The Shining.

Springer - my ds is only 18mo so still pre verbal, but i do tend to choose my battles carefully. So he gets to play with the washing machine (when it's not on) but not the cooker. Should I just ban all playing with kitchen appliances? Would that make it easier for him to understand that no, he can't get into the fridge...

Oh yes, the fridge, source of amazing fascination....

DS has now taken to opening the freezer and saying mournfully 'peas?'

This morning's tantrum was because he didn't want to eat his breakfast, he wanted to eat mine, even tho he doesn't like muesli. He's 2 in a couple of weeks. Now safely at the CM's where he is apparently a paragon of virtue

springer...liking the Shining comparison!

DD (2 in a fortnight) this morning:

'No, No NOOO!!!! Mummy...I don't want a ponytail'.

Me: 'OK dd, you don't have to have a ponytail'

Millisecond pause

'WAAAAAHH!!! I want a ponytail, a ponytail A PONYTAIL!!' (And so on for quite a while.)

Getting in the car, had a tantrum because she wanted to choose a stone to take with her. 'Look Mummy's got you one'

'NOOOOO, not dat one, not dat one. I want a ROUND one. WAAAAHHH....' (Fade out....oh how I wish I could )

YY - ds is always perfectly behaved at nursery, he comes home with his book saying things like, "Ds was really loving and chatty today," "Ds has really enjoyed playing with the sticklebricks and Duplo today."

We have Sticklebrocks at home. The only thing he likes to do with them is pretend to choke on them to make me come into the room panicking!!

"do you want a crumpet?" "Yes mummy". "Here's your crumpet". "NO WANT CRUMPET, NO LIKE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUMMY". "Right then, shall I throw it in the bin" "Yes". "NOOOOO Mummy want crumpet".

Honestly its like a game with no rules (or playing Buckaroo blindfold - you know its going to go off, but you have no idea what will trigger it!!)

Over the dog stealing his breakfast (after having abandoned said breakfast because he didn't want to eat it).

Over my choice of trousers for him (major meltdown)

Over choice of top for him (minor meltdown).

Over need to wear raincoat to walk the dog.

Over ds2 touching one of his toy cars.

Not bad for 2.5 hours. Sure we'll have more later.

Major grump for not being allowed to hammer the table. Not convinced that hammering an empty box is louder (it is).
Minor grump for spaceman pants being in the wash and not available.
Bottom lip out at selection of Tshirts offered.
Arms folded when presented with bowl of cereal (thawed when plate of toast waved under nose).
Strop brewing for not being allowed to play with playdoh on the carpet (not a new rule! better on the table, obviously).

Best random meltdown: at the weekend in the car while using the TomTom " but Muuuummy I dunWANNA bear left!!!"

Over not being allowed to play with the dishwasher (suburban I know what you mean - I let him play with the washing machine when it's not on. And the hoover. He LOVES the hoover).

Over dh turning his sippy cup around so he could actually get a drink out of it.

Over not being allowed to play with ornamental plant pot with twigs snd stones in our serviced apartment.

It's the end of the day here so I guess that's not too bad going

Oh and every single nappy change is a minor meltdown. Forgot about those...

DD had a meltdown over the fact that the car wouldn't start. Personally would have liked to join her, but as she is 2 and I am 32 felt it might have been a little inappropriate

Hoorah, hoorah, hoorah. Either:

(1)My child is not Satan

or:

(2) All of our children are Satan

Aah. You've all reminded my crazy, very pregnant brain how cute they are.

Am tempted to go and get him from nursery early.

Oops - ER calling...
