stomach bug.....

I feel a bit asking this as i have been a parent for nearly 8 years but havent really had many to deal with!

Yesterday ds had a couple of hours of vomiting but it passed and he was fine.

Tonight dd2 started complaining of being sick while she was in the bath then after she got out proceeded to hurl all over the bathroom, she has been sick about 5 times since 7:30. I think her stomach is empty now as its mainly gagging and a tiny bit of clear fluid.

dd1 decided to follow suit shortly afterwards.......goodbye sleep......

But im not sure on how to deal with it aoart from rubbing their backs when they are sick, do i still give them drinks etc??

Any advice would be gratefully recieved! x

Give them drinks of water until they are voraciously demanding food - then keep them on the odd slice of toast until the next day. Don't give them any dairy.

You need to keep them hydrated. Sips of water. If you can get them to take rehydration salts so much the better. Withdraw all solid food for 24 hours. They will start to feel better and start asking for food very soon. Start with one piece of dry toast - take it very slowly.

BTW you will probably get it too - sorry.

I gave dd2 some water and she was sick shortly after, i wasnt sure if this was because i had given it her. What do i do if she is sick everytime i give her a drink?

Quite scared TBH

I was told by my GP to give squash, rather than plain water as the sugar in it helps it to stay down.

Also, make them take tiny sips, not big gulps as a sudden rush into the tummy will probably make them sick again.

Hope your night isn't too bad!

No diary, If they keep being sick, could try some flat lemonade, settles the stomach. Also give them plain boiled water, lots of it. I find if I drink it warm, it is more likely to stay down, cold seems to make things come back up more quickly, think it shocks the stomach!

The fluid will help ease the pain of being sick if they do continue being ill, its much better to bring something up than just retch.

I think Pavlov means dairy

You can flatten any lemonade or fizzy drink by sticking sugar in it. But it does expand and bubble up so don't plonk it in the bottle.

Don't be scared, this is normal for this sort of bug. If it's norovirus it'll last a few days. oh and they'll feel like crap for a week or so.

You must keep up the fluids.

Avoid fruit juices, I am thinking of orange juice - it is acidic, and if it comes back up i will hurt.

Even if they appear to sick all the fluid back up, they will hold a small amount/absorb it. And if they do start seeming dehydrated, take them to GP, and use rehydration salkts, like mentioned already.

I hope they feel better soon, and you get a good night's sleep.

Oh yes, and make sure they have the following by their beds:

(1) Bucket
(2) Tissues to wipe mouth
(3) Drinks

Let them wear very little clothing and bedclothing - they'll be hot anyway from the fever and if you cover them up they will just be sick on it anyway!

They do keep being sick, you haven't caused it, it's the bug! They stilll have to drnk though and tepid boiled water is best.

Basically, you baby them again!

Those rehydration powders for children you can buy are good if someone can go to the chemist for you. Dissolve in hot-ish boiled water and then cool. Serve tepid or cold. (I think you are meant to keep them in the fridge for no longer than 12 hrs - check packet - can't remember- sorry, could be 24 hrs). Anyway, OK to re-heat just a little bit in microwave to take the worst of the cold off it.

Then with use of a kitchen timer, give dc a just a few sips every 15 mins. It's surprising how much they can consume that way.

Once they are feeling better then tiny portions of boiled rice or tiny pieces of plain crackers and flat Cocoa Cola are good (last one recommended by a doctor funnily enough).

Poor you! Hope your dc are feeling much better soon.
