Sugar rush or normal toddler behaviour

DS is 2.5 and flips between hyper and lazy, pretty normal for a toddler I believe. He can be really hyper and hard to calm down at times and we're used to that.

However, tonight after his dinner he was simply going nuts. He was running in circles to make himself dizzy, jumping on the beds (something he never does), running, screaming, kicking the walls and generally behaving badly. He was scarlet, presumably from the energy he was putting out and we were actually getting quite concerned at some points. He was like this nearly an hour until he then decided to refuse to let us in his room (sitting behind the door) and cried. He then went to bed without a fight at all. DH made a joke "what the hell did you give him for dinner" and it's actually got me thinking. He had loads of carbs and also tinned sweetcorn (the sugar/salt water stuff) that he never usually eats.

Could it be that he had extremely high blood sugar? Should I be concerned at all? DH is away tomorrow for 2 wks so it's quite possible that all of this was a performance for him...

Any preservatives in the tinned sweetcorn? Sodium benoate can cause hyperactivity in some children

no preservatives in anything he had yesterday.

And wow he's a grump this morning. I wonder if he's just coming down with something.

Sounds like my ds2 - he's not like it all the time but every now and again he really goes into one 9 yesterday morning for instance). He then sleeps it off and he's fine. I haven't associated it with what he eats, I think it's just him.

He flipped out again at lunchtime today - hid in the hall and refused to let anyone near him. Finally convinced him to cuddle me and he did for a few seconds then attacked me and has left my face all scratched! He then hit DD very hard - was taken to his room, calmed down a lot and went for an early nap. Must be tiredness and not feeling well as we all have the cold now.

Thanks for the responses anyway. My mum was getting me all worried that it wasn't normal!

Sound like normal behaviour for a 2 year old.

He kind of reminds me of the way I was as a teenager... I guess I've got that to look forward to too!
