I tell my boys that if they don't hold my hand when we are out in the dark then the bats will eat their ears They tend to hold one hand and have the other over their other ear

Its a control thing!

My mum used to keep me in line by reminding me that if I misbehaved, she'd take me back to the child shop and pick another one!

My mother used to tell me that if I didn't get off the escalator really quickly my feet would get sucked in at the end and shredded. .

The silly thing is, I am now thirtysomething, know perfectly well I'm not going to be sucked in, but I'm still a bit twitchy about the end of escalators (I tend to kind of jump over the end and get very antsy if the person in front of me is dawdling a bit and I may not be able to jump sharply off ). So I'm not sure it did me any long-term favours, psychologically speaking.

my parents didn't tell me any horror stories - when they said 'don't' I didn't!

I did ask my dad once what would happen as I'd swallowed an orange pip and he said and orange tree was gonna grow inside me!

My mother told me that if I swallowed chewing gum it would tie my lungs together. I believed it for years .

Not sure if this fits into the "keeping safe" category, but my mother also used to tell us to "Go and play under the buses" when we were winding her up. I found myself recently suggesting to DS3 that he might like to play under a bus - does that make me a bad mother?

My mum said if you go in Woolworth's or the cinema you catch polio (but it was ok to see The Railway Children)

Hassled, my mother told me the same thing about swallowing chewing gum

She also told me that if I do any more than sip a fizzy drink, I may exlode..

And that if I swallow an apple pip, a tree will grow inside me and the branches will grow out of my ears while I sleep!

Mother Earth I am not, but I so would not tel my children these things!!!

If you sit on the step you will get piles and not be able to poo properly.

I've just been chatting to my brother and he told me that one, I had forgotten

If you sit on radiators you will get chilblains (although it was the teachers who claimed that, not my parents).

My friend couldn't get her DS out of the swimming pool at the end of the session. She would tell him that a shark lived in the filter grating and was let out at the end of the session to clean up the pool!
