We spent last Sunday with some 'first baby' couples. I know we've all been there. But, really......

This was at my MIL's with Mr Bubble's cousins and their babies.

One had a NASA style baby monitor and both couples arrived with travel cots with cat-covers.

One asked Mr Bubble where the cat was and he said that it had seen sense and scarpered. A 'cat-hunt' then ensued, even though this particular baby was in an autoclaved, temperature-controlled, cat-netted travel cot.

Mr Bubble buggered off to play with the big Bubble boys, leaving me to listen to puke-making cooing and discussions about Baby Mozart.

Puke.

Was I ever that bad?

Answer.

Probably.

I used to keep a thermometer in ds1's carry-cot and I had a little card with tog ratings on and I would spend all night putting blankets on, taking blankets off, putting a sheet on, taking it off, every time the thermometer showed a degree of change...

I probably was as well. It could have been worse than Baby Mozart - I recently saw adverts for ANTENATAL music classes

Why are people so para about cats? My mother practically covered out entire house in netting when DS1 was born. Our cat, of course, was not seen for dust for about 2 years.

Blimey - we never even thought about cat danger with ds's!! Our cat is very sensible and only surfaces at about 7.30pm...

We have two cats and one baby and we don't have a catnet. Both MiL and my mum were horrified and insisted we get one. We rolled eyes thus: and said we would. Then ignored them.

The cats are fecking terrified of the squarky thing in the cage with no top.

mts, don't laugh...I had a speaker thing that I could tuck in my (very large) knickers to play music to the bump...in my defence I didn't buy it; it was a gift.

Don't worry just think how mortified they'll be when they realise!

I bought a cat net for my silver cross pram so I could stick dd out in the back garden to get some air (in a kinda 1950's stylee).

The cat thought it was a hammock and sat bouncing on it every time I fixed it on... so it soon got binned!

Yes, I too had the tog/blanket/vest/sleepsuit/layers thing going on until we realised our baby monitor would beep continuously if the temperature rose one iota above 21C, which in our house it does if the sun peeks out for more than 5 minutes a day, even with no heating on, windows wide open, fan going, heat-blocking blind kept down all day - and so we unplugged the damn thing and gave up worrying!

oh I'll let you off if it was a gift, just about.

I love the 'photo album' thing.

First baby? Albums and albums full.

Second baby?

'Oh, I think I've got a couple somewhere. '

Lovecat - yep, that's exactly what I said would happen if we had one and that's why we didn't bother!

They did well to even get there though. I remember waiting HOURS for a new baby couple to even get out of their own front door ...

I still suffer from PFB sydrome (though now ds is a toddler I manage to keep it under check a bit).

Still at those with PFB babies though.

I was terrible. Had a friend who was erm 'plain speaking' though and talked a bit of sense into me. Am very grateful to her (alas she has now moved to devon).

Never bothered with a cat net - despite having 2 cats - but had a fly net as we live on a farm. It attracted flies and got covered in sh*t so I stopped using it long ago.

We have two cats (no shit, Sherlock) and a cat net. We have a picture of the cats playing football with the cat net. This was the only time it was ever used....

They were in awe at us having 4 children.

Mine was the only baby with dirty toenails, though.

wmmc - we felt bad for the cat when we binned it, he was very pleased with himself boinging up and down, while protected from the scary little person beneath!

You do realise someone is going to get huffy about this thread, don't you?

I actually found the people I encountered in a restaurant showing off loudly about how their first baby hadn't altered their life at all more annoying. Until DP pointed out (it was one of our rare Nights Out Together, just our luck to get the baby on the next table) that both parents went off to change the infant's nappy and they took about half an hour over it.
