My 20 month old chocked on a lolly! Now he won't stop crying

We were at a party when my 20 month old must have found a lolly. It was a small hard boiled lolly. We had no idea he picked it up or he had even found it. We have no idea where it came from but the lolly came off the stick and we didn't know what was going on until he began to cough and we seen the lolly stick in his hand with no lolly on. He went red/purple and my partner hit him really hard on the back in a panic and the lolly came rolling out. We are so shocked but relived he's ok!! Anyways this was a few hours ago and after he cried for 5 minuets then was fine. We decided to leave the party as I was all on edge and didn't want to be there anymore as you can imagine so we went home and my little boy was fine got his pjs on went up to bed but has since woke up twice crying and unsettled. Could the choking have some effect on him afterwards? Should I take him to a&e eventhough it was hours ago and he was fine afterwards? I'm still in quite a state about how he got this lolly and where it came from and how shocking it was for us to all see

Poor thing! He may have injured his throat somehow. Would definitely get it checked out. If he's sleeping now maybe take him to a&e or GP first thing. If he keeps waking crying, would be inclined to ring 101 & take him in now.

He's back asleep now, he is coming down with a cold so I am unsure if he's crying because of the choking or if it's just simply he's not feeling well so I have given him medicine and he's back asleep for now so I will see if he wakes again

It was frightening for him and you. The lolly could have had a sharp edge that has scratched him slightly. Did the whole lolly come out? If so I'm sure he will be ok with lots of cuddles and maybe some calpol for the sore throat.

he may be getting a cold, he may have hurt his throat a little but if he can breath then he's fine

Yes it all came out it was a ball shape I picked it up to take a close look and it appeared to be a full lolly

When my DS was about the same age he chocked on a bread stick. I did the same as your DH and a couple of back slaps later out it came and he calmed down quite quickly but later that day he was unsettles and clingy and quite weepy. I took him to the Dr's to check his throat and they said it was fine but could just be a form of delayed shock. Lots of cuddles and a quiet few days at home and he was right as rain again. But do get him checked if he continues to be upset because he could have hurt his throat in someway.

Just want to say off course you did the right thing, or partner did, to slap him on the back to dislodge the lolly, but could the force of the adult hand have hurt your little ones back? I would do, and have done the same. Just an idea to check if he's still upset.
