My new born who is a week old hasn't had a poo since 17:15 yesterday which is abnormal I called 111 and they have suggested massage techniques and advised me to take him to children's hospital this morning if still no movement which I will do but wondered if anyone else has experienced this? He is on formula actimel which he has been fine with until now, I was also using cow and gate ready milk when out and about as he was given this at hospital but advised not to mix formula so won't do that now.....

I doubt that using two brands of formula has anything to do with the lack of pooing. Especially as Aptamil and C&G are made by the same company and are very similar. Hope it sorts itself out soon, and that everything is ok with your DS.

My dd has constipation troubles from birth until about 4 months old. Apparently hospitals don't actually worry until your baby has gone 10 days without a poop! Dd would go up to 5 days at a time, although she wasn't in pain with it, so no one worried. FF babies poo alot less often that bf babies also, so unless your little one seems to be in severe pain with trapped wind/constipation, there is little need to worry :) Maybe try offering smaller feeds more often, to give his little system time to adjust. They're still so young and their digestive systems are getting used to working, so it could take a few months until he poos normally.

Dd was given all sorts of medication and special formulas to help her poo, but she still only went once every few days. As soon as we started weaning her though, my god! 2-3 times a day at least!

Basically, do not worry, this is completely normal, many babies go through it. If you're very worried though, keep a log of when your baby feeds, how much, and when they poo, incase your health visitor wants to discuss changing formula with you.

I would ring your HV tomorrow morning as they will be able to give you better advice than 111

Just realised you will still be under midwife care so ring them instead. If you are very worried tonight ring the maternity ward.

Ah I remember those first baby newborn days where every minute lasts a day so every tiny thing out of the 'ordinary' feels like the worst thing in the world. Dd slept on us for pretty much her entire first 3 months.
