how often did you/do you take new baby to be weighed?

I took DD1 every 4wks at first and after about 6 months I left it a couple of months each time until she reached 1 when she had her annual assessment.

DD2 is due August and I'm dreading getting her weighed. It's a drop in clinic but have been there up to 90mins before. It wasn't so bad with DD1 but with two I'm just thinking it's going to be a little difficult and I just dislike the setup I guess. It's my only option though, I can't book private appointments.

So how long can I get away with do you think (unless there are concerns with her weight of course)?

Thanks all

I took my first child once and vowed never again.

I now have 5 dc and stuck to that. I got my dc weighed at the normal hv checks.

If I had a concern with food/weight I would have made an appointment.

Those places are hell on earth.

Never. With dc1 I had bad spd and couldn't get to the clinic, he seemed healthy, did plenty of wet/dirty nappies, grew out of his clothes, so with dc2, who was similarly healthy and growing well, I didn't bother. Too boring for dc1 and no need. I'd of course have gone if at all concerned.

Weekly, but she was quite a low birth weight and I struggled to get bfing established, plus I was very anxious so I did everything by the book in those days.

Um... well... never? She was weighed when the health visitor came out when she was born and since then I've never taken her to clinic. She's been unofficially weighed a few times by my MIL who's a health visitor and DH and I occasionally get on the scales with her too.

I don't understand the point of it? I can see she's growing... she's EBF and thriving on it!

you will get loads of people saying 'never! took them once and never bothered again'. loads. whereas in real life I don't know anybody who's ever done that...

when DD was tiny I took her every 4/6 weeks until she was about 5 months? then whenever I remembered!

Never. They were growing and eating. Good enough for me.

Never the health visitor comes out every fortnight to us though as dc2 really struggled to put weight on due to reflux and she's also under paed but I have took her to the gp before when I've had concerns, dc1 has asd and behavioural problems and he freaks out if it's to busy/noisy etc so can't really take both with me and Hv also agreed it wouldn't be a good idea as it would be too stressful Smile

I used to take DD every week then when she was 5 months an awful HV really upset me and I never took her again.
Ds1 and 2 have never been to baby clinic, they just got weighed at the well baby checks.
My sister took dn every week as she lost weight and they wanted to keep an eye on her, what it actually did was undermine my sister breastfeeding and stress a new mum out so much that she ended up on formula and very guilty that she had ever breastfed and made her feel that she should have only formula fed from birth. My sister was a mess for months but obviously couldn't see through it as the 'experts' kept telling her 'do this, do that'

When they got their needles. Those charts did my swede in.

I took ds1 once and thought never again!
I actually then went to a post natal group run by the HV in a local meeting hall and the did weight there.
I don't actually remember ever taking ds2. Think he has birth weight, post birth HV visit weights and then 8m check weight in his red book.

I never did and the clinic was only 5 mins away. I might have if DD was having issues with reflux etc but she was fine and obviously growing so I didn't bother.

Do it if it gives you piece of mind but it is certainly not essential.

I did about fortnightly up till about 4 months, but only because I was struggling to get breastfeeding going and I wanted to keep an eye on weight gain. Once that was sorted out, I did once more just before starting weaning, and then I didn't go to the drop in clinics any more. The next weigh in was at the 12 months check, then at the 2 yr check.

Yes, agree with a pp, everyone I know in RL went pretty regularly. Lots of reasons to go, particularly if you've been having problems, which many of us do. Not every parent is full of confidence with a problem-free baby. Sorry, but I hate posts that suggest there's no earthly reason why anyone would do this.

I've been about 5 times I think (baby is 8 months). Yes it's hell and I wasnt worried about his weight (if I had been I would have been more often), but it was really useful to get advice on stuff like eczema.

Loads! About once a month until 6 months, then every 6 weeks or so until a year, then every few months! But the hv clinic was alongside a playgroup that we went to weekly anyway.

We've just moved and I'm overdue with DC2, who will probably be weighed very rarely.

First child, once every 2 weeks for the first couple of months. Second child, once in her life

I took her every week for the first 6 months. She lost a lot of weight after birth and I had trouble feeding, so I was a bit paranoid. Also, the clinic is right at the end of my road, so it never took me more than 10 minutes.

I always felt the HVs made me feel obliged to go (not because there were concerns or anything though). I didn't actually realise you never actually have to take them! I guess it makes sense though. Providing I'm confident with DD2 in weight and general wellbeing then I won't take her which is already a weight of my shoulders!

Thanks for comments.

Took dc1 loads but didn't bother with dc2.

Should add that he was weighed at the standard hv visits, but I didn't take along to the clinic outside of that.

Took my first a couple of times which ensured that I avoided it like the plague with the rest tbh. I knew they were growing so that was enough for me.

When people say the standard HV visits what do they mean? I've had one at 6 weeks and will have another one around 9 months. Is that normal?
