In complete misery - baby's tooth broken

My baby is only 6 months old and got little tooth stumps at the bottom at about 4 months. One of the teeth has always looked like it had not come through quite properly and has been less bulky looking than the other. This morning I noticed that a large section of the middle of the tooth was missing!! This leaves two little spikes at each side of the tooth and gap in the middle. It really looks broken and is very sharp. I am devastated! We are going to the dentist tomorrow. I am confused as there was no bang or impact or anything. I keep playing in my mind what could have happened. The baby does have a few harder teething rings and also perhaps she chewed one of the the zips on the pushchair? Could these things have done it, or could it have been a structural weakness? It seems so unlikely that it would be broken so early.

I'm really, really upset. Does anyone have any experience of this?

They do come through really sharp and kind of wibbly along the top, and my understanding was that as they use them (on food or toys) they gradually smooth out. Maybe your DDs have just become a bit uneven and will smooth down? Hopefully the dentist will be able to reassure you.

Do you think I could have caused it by giving her hard teething toys?

If if has broken it was probably not formed properly in the first place. That sometimes happens and has no impact on the adult teeth.

No, I don't think hard teething toys would have caused it at all. The dentist hopefully will be able to tell you more.

Not sure how bad it is but my DD fell forward in the bath at about 10 months old chipping both front teeth. I too was devastated at the time. Now ages 6 it really is barely noticeable.

I really don't think any hard teething ring could have caused this. My dd chews on metal when she can get away with it! Lots of young kids have spiky looking vampire teeth that even out as they get older. I remember the bite marks from my brother's! If your dd's is chipped, don't worry it isn't your fault. Babies are always bumping into things and these aren't her permanent teeth.
