and any thoughts on how they find it. I am looking into it but my husband has only read articles regarding parents who decided to home school after various issues at school, rather than starting to teach from home at 3/4 and therefore not try school at all. any thoughts/ramblings welcome, please

Have you found the Home-ed board on MN? Its under Education...it's worth a look if you are thinking of doing it.

I have freinds who do, some of the reasons for doing it from the outset:
Wanting to use a religious curriculum
Not agreeing with the national curriculum (you don't have to follow the NC)
Not wanting to put pressure on their DC to be at a certain level by a certain age
Living in an area where there are only poor schools
Some want to opt our completely and live an a sort of alternative lifestyle
Letting DC start formal education later (which is something that happens in other countries and works well)
Letting their DC work autonomously
Being able to allow DC to work on a subject for as long as they like
Some of my friends 'attachment parent' in a big way, so HE just sort of follows on
They also love the freedom of not being at all tied to school holidays or pick up times...and as such you get to visit museums etc during term time when it is quieter

I did dabble in HE and couldn't have done it for long tbh. You have to be careful to keep a balance view IMO, there are loads of articles and 'studies' that show how dreadful school is and how bad it is for DCs, it is easy to get a bit sucked in and one sided.
