What does he wear?

Swim nappy?
Normal nappy?
Swim shorts with built in nappy?
No nappy?

What clothing?
Full suit thing?
Swim shorts?
Nothing?

What do you do?
Thanks!

Loads of suncream
Hat

Everything else not so important, but I'd say
Swim pants ( the kind with built in terry nappy thing) or swim nappy

Suncream

where will you be?

Swim nappy ( I just use the huggies disposable ones)
All in one swim suit (which covers shoulders and down to knees) - less suncream required
If in the UK, wetsuit over the top. Take off when finished in the water but leave suit underneath on.

In this combo, we've been in the sea in April. Even my skinny little DD who constantly feels the cold. Obvs if lovely and warm the wetsuit is unnecessary but it's great for those cold days when a cold baby can get miserable very quickly.

I'd go for swim nappy plus a sunsuit that covers arms and legs and has a decent spf rating, and suncream all over

Thanks!
Can I ask how you kept a hat on yours? He won't let us at the mo, but is only 9 months, going away when he'll be 11 months.

Posted too soon!
UK holiday, Devon. So will probably not be amazing weather but if it's cold then we won't be going in the sea anyway.
We have a full suit thing for him, but that's it so far apart from a few different hats to try to get him used to them.

Yeah we've bought him one if those from somewhere else with a matching hat. So just that and a swim nappy if the seas warm enough?

I'm not very hardy but surely even on a hot summer day in the UK the sea here will be too cold for an 11 month old without a proper wetsuit?

Watching though as we are also having a UK holiday and am wondering whether DCs aged 5 and 7 will need wetsuits to swim here without getting utterly freezing after 10 minutes (as was our experience last summer in Brittany).

It really depends on the temp. I live in Australia, so if I were back in England I probably wouldn't bother with a full UV suit. Obviously plenty of sunscreen and a hat (if you can keep it on) and if it is really hot and sunny (over 25 degrees) I would go with some kind of bottoms and a separate rash vest top.

I also don't both with a nappy in the sea - mine are pretty predictable with poos and I don't think wees matter. I've never been caught out with a poo... If it is inclement weather DD just goes in completely naked (with sunscreen and a hat...)

Also, if you get one of those full suits, make sure it has a zip all the way down for easy changing.

H and m have baby hats that tie under the chin. A lifesaver for a baby that won't keep a normal hat on!

vest
Reckon this over the top of the uv suit would keep him warm enough/good idea or no?

Thanks will look in H&M.

I'm going to end up buying a zillion options and it's gonna rain all holiday isn't it?!

We live near the sea and ours have always had wetsuits. So much more fun if you can stay in for longer! Don't bother with expensive ones if it's just for the beach- Tescos are good.

I just sewed elastic onto all of his hats to make a chin strap. I find once they're firmly on he doesn't notice them

I've always wondered if dc find those uv suits restrictive - but that might be because my ds has always loved getting naked, especially outside in the summer!

We did swim nappy, swimming trunks, suncream and hat. Sometimes swim nappy without trunks.

Take a very small blow up paddling pool. Filling it up with bucket is fun for 11month old and won't get hypothermia playing in it. Sea in UK too cold most of time.

We were in Wales with dd 13 mo, and had a swim nappy and all in one swim suit thingy. She had just started to walk so it's not like we were running into the waves to need the jacket.

Just put standard layers on when out of the sea. She particularly loved putting pebbles in and out of buckets.

Why would you need a nappy In the sea?

I thought they were just an etiquette thing for swimming pools so the poo doesn't go everywhere. Surely in the sea it doesn't matter?

Report
addictedtosugar · 20/05/2015 20:08

Don't have a normal nappy in the sea (or pool). They absorb all the water, and turn into a bulky, soggy mess.

Report
fortunately · 20/05/2015 20:09

Yes I know, I was thinking no nappy!

I wouldn't bother with anything in the sea.

Report
lexyloub · 21/05/2015 11:29

Definitely a swim nappy rather than a normal nappy I made this mistake with Dc1 the normal nappies absorb all the water and gave him terrible nappy rash
