Need help for a friends baby gift please - I know I want to get the basics ie vests, bodysuits etc but want them sufficiently high end to feel like a gift....

Tried Jo Jo Maman Bebe but they only have patterns and I was after plain white. John Lewis??

What are the best quality baby basics you've found??

John Lewis is probably your best bet there then.

Just out of curiosity, your friend doesn't happen to love the smell of bleach and steam clean her floors twice a day?

White company. So lovely. So expensive no one would ever buy it for themselves.

John Lewis are good
Could also try Absorba ( can get them in Harrods)

Petit Bateau has all the basics with a French label and nice wrapping at eye watering prices. It's good quality and washes brilliantly, which is the upside of paying £££ for white vests

yes also wanted to recommend Petit Bateau.

John Lewis vests are lovely quality. H&M long-sleeved vests are nice enough to wear as a top rather than just under things.

Petite bateau or the White company.

John Lewis white ones are just basic white babygrows imo ( 5 for £12 kinda of price)

White company! I did buy them for myself in the sale! Mamas and Papas also excellent!

I have green baby (now called little green radicals) vests that have lasted 3 babies and look new still. Polaryn o pyret also very good quality but not sure if they do plain white.

Awesome - great ideas thank you everyone will get on it now.

Don't think she's that fussed by bleach or steam cleaning...?!

Might treat DD2 to some new stuff while I'm there!!

I Didn't think the John Lewis bodysuit vests were up to much, the ones I have haven't washed well and are on the small side. The marks and Spencer's packs I have had are lovely and seem to wash the best. H and m wrap ones were my favourite with newborn though as they were so easy to do up, rather than pulling up or over head. The jojomamanbebe ones we have haven't washed well either, they are almost scratchy after 2 washes.

I think john lewis vests are terrible quality. They go short and wide after a few washes. M and S are better and often do pima cotton ones.

Polarn O Pyret. The link is to their classic unisex striped collection. Their stuff washes amazingly and lasts forever. If you want really silly money type of stuff, look at selfridges online. For lovely edgy design stuff, Elias and Grace have lovely stuff. Lots of times you can find sale and "last ones" on there at 70% off.

What I did however is put those designer labels into ebay, specified "new" and found lots of bargains!! There is a huge amount of baby stuff for sale with still tags on, as lots of people save the expensive gift clothes for special occasion and the baby has an unexpected growth spurt. I got lots of new items for .99 too as sellers overestimate interest and no one else bids on it to push the opening price up.

Petit Bateau washes really well, but also note that the sizing comes up small and they are very slim cut. So if your friend's baby is likely to be a big chunky one, don't get the first sizes.

Uniqlo have lovely stuff too. Very cleverly easy to get on/off ... perfect for weighing clinic, swimming, spare clothes in case of poonami etc.

Mamas and papas plain white vests are not plain they have an ugly logo label on or I would have got some last week.
