How d I know if my child is reading something controversial?

My son borrows many books from the library weekly. I don't have the time to read through all of it as I'm working, but I'm afraid he's reading something with offensive language or has graphic descriptions of violence, and will be a bad influence on him

google the books and have a look through the write up to get an idea?

talk to him about the books he's reading and discuss the things in them and the issues that may arise and how he feels about the things he's reading?

Talk to him about the worlds and the views that books give you and what is and is not appropriate to bring into real life?

Do some research on books and get a list beforehand of books you are happy for him to read and let him choose from those?

How old is he?

Thanks HectatePropylaea. He's currently 6 years old. I'm happy that he likes to go to the library and pick up books. Yes you're right I should do the research and talk to him about it. I just wonder if there's some way of flagging out offensive books easily so that I can better decide if he's ready for the book and engage him in a more meaningful way if there are possible red flags.

If he's picking them from the children's section of the library then he'll be fine. If he wanders into the teen section then I'd google them

Try the "Book Check" app. (iOS: itunes.apple.com/us/app/book-check/id899711914?ls=1&mt=8, Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ukusan.bookcheck).

Hold your phone over the book's barcode, and it'll tell you if there's anything controversial about it, so that you can decide if the book is suitable.
