Gripe Water - experiences please!!

My 5 month old dd sleeps soundly from 7pm - 1am, thereafter is awake lots, sometimes every hour until the morning. It seems she is in discomfort as she is windy and wriggly. Seems bit worse since starting weaning. Have heard gripe water could help? Never used before and wondered what other's experiences have been?

My only memory of it is that it tastes gross!! (Yes randomly I must have tried it) not particularly useful for my LO, we got on better with infacol.

Could you try putting LO down slightly later to bed? (I know 'they' don't recommend this) but I found it meant baby's longer stretch of sleep fitted with mine so bit easier to cope with waking..

  • I love the taste of gripe water!! I remember it from when I was little- my Mum must have given me it till I was 5! Been giving my 8 week old it from 1 month after feeds and it usually results in one huge burp. DS seems to hate the taste if infacol.

Personally I found infacol too useless, and gripe water too much of a bother. I found a grape seed or cherry stone cushion warmed in microwave helped enormously on their tums, leave a folded up blanket under mattress to raise end by head slightly. If weaning try making her milk with (hot) diluted fennel tea - was the only thing that got rid of my daughters colic. also think about what you give for evening meal - sounds simple but we found bananas a total no go for our DD - gave her terrible tummy ache. We found simple baby rice with effectively baby custard worked best in the evenings - nothing like chicken with rice etc - nothing bloating or windy. Hope this helps!

It definitely helped my DS. I seem to remember him liking the one made by boots - it had more of an apple flavour. Not sure if they still produce it though.

I don't know if it's placebo or not but it definitely helped DS. I'd read a lot about it being a thing everybody thinks works but in actual fact does nothing, but it always calmed DS down and helped his belly. Maybe it was the sweet taste - who knows. Whatever works, right?
