Did anybody *not* buy a present for the older child "from the baby"?

Because I haven't bought anything for the dd's.
Just didn't feel right in the circumstances.

Is their relationship with their brother going to be doomed?

We didn't. Couldn't really see the point. But I did ask the 3yo, on the day baby was born, if we should keep the new baby or send her back. Don't know what I was thinking....but fortunately she opted for us keeping the baby.

We didn't. We gave the baby to DS for a present. It seems to have worked as he always asks for the baby whenever he wakes up, and wants us to put her on the floor with him as soon as possible.

I did. Blush When I had babies 2, 3, and 4. I am feeling like a freaka for admitting it, but really I wanted to answer the "what is the point?" posts.

The point was that the older children did not feel excluded and /or neglected by the new arrival and the fact that their mother had been taken from them suddenly in the night (as happened twice). I didn't buy much and they knew perfectly well that the present was really from me and not the baby (well they did last time around certainly) but it just made the event a little more personal for them.

I have to say, I had dreadful trouble I think with pregnancy number 3 when ds1 and ds2 came with me to an antenatal appointment and the doctor let them listen to the baby's heartbeat. unfortunately, the doctor joked to them that the baby was playing the drum it was going to give them for a present when it was born, and ds1 believed this and kept talking about it! I had no intention of giving him a drum and he had to make do with a new train for his trainset!

no, I didn't. dd1 was so very excited about the baby coming that I didn't see the point.
she has sooooo much stuff anyway.
I am always really reluctant to buy her anything at birthdays/Christmas as it just seems like a present orgy sometimes.

We didn't but there is only a 21 month age gap so ds1 didn't really understand anyway! We also told him that it was his baby. What will the age gap be?

emkana · 09/06/2006 20:27

Dd1 is five, dd2 nearly three.

I did give DS a gift. We gave him a scooter so that he wouldn't find the walks with the baby tedious and make things easier for me getting him out the door, worked like a charm Wink

My gaps are so big I never felt the need. I do buy (small) presents for siblings though when I buy presents for new babies, particularly if they are close in age.
