Bought one when my dd was three.

I found it a pain in the bum to position actually. The slide takes up a lot of space. I've put it against the shortest wall, meaning dd almost always bangs her feet into the skirtings when she slides down in the mornings. I've had to pad the bottom of the slide with teddies to make it a soft landing.

TBH, the novelty of the slide wore off quickly. She never plays on it. It's my baby nephew who loves it whenever he's round.

DD (now 5) actually prefers coming down the ladders in the morning than using the slide.

As to the bedding - not really that difficult to change. I sort of reach over to the wall side and pull the mattress up.

It's a mid sleeper.

Make sure the room is big enough to allow space at the foot of the side.
Both DSs had mid height cabin beds from about 2, and only DS2 ever fell out (just the once!) To start out, I used a futon mattress which was thinner than a normal mattress which meant that the rails were higher.
They can be a bit of a PITA to change the bedding on but it's not impossible.

Interestingly, DS1 (who had the one with the slide) never mucked about on it at bedtime. I was very surprised!

High sleepers are usually only recommended for older ones - 6 plus often. I didn't fancy one for DS anyway but the age thing put me off a bit.

You can get some really cool canopies though which look amazing.

That's exactly the type we were looking at! He's very much a mummy's boy an wakes up a couple of times at night just to check I'm still next to him, so I suspect it will have to be a really awesome bed for him to want to sleep in it! Good to hear you've not had any problems with sturdiness and separating play/sleep beanbagz!

Forgot to say i always join him in bed for bedtime stories but i use the ladder as the slide is quite skinny for my bottom

DS has had a mid-height bed with a slide since he was just under 3 years old (over 5 years now) and has shown no signs of having grown out sliding down it every morning.

He loves it and it's relatively easy to change the better as the mattress we bought is quite light. I think it'd be a lot harder to change if it was a full height bunk bed.

The good thing about ours is that the slide is at 90 degrees to the bed so that it fits into the corner of his room. I know a lot of slide beds have them at an angle. It has a guard so he can't fall out.

And best of our there's load of space for him to play undreneath it.

We recently chose a single bed over a mid-sleeper...
The main party pooper reasons were:
- My DS is nearly 3, was worried about him falling out of bed.
- PITA to change bed clothes.
- As a family we read stories in bed, would mean both me, DS, and DH delicately shimmying up the ladder.
- If he were sick there would be nowhere to put a sick bowl.
- He's recently potty trained day and night, so don't want to discourage him from going for a night time wee if needed!

I know, so boring and practical... we went for a single with an underneath trundle. Yawn!!!

I would be too worried about DS falling out.... (DS is just 3 and is in a normal single bed - which he has fallen out of a couple of times ;) ).

I also think that I don't want to make bed too "fun" I want him to get in it and go to sleep, not spend hours climbing up and going down the slide... ;)

Ha ha I'd love one for myself! Unfortunately I don't think dp would agree! I shall instead dream of one day having a house with a staircase slide.....

Oh, and having spent years living in various Paris studio flats with loft beds, yes, the bedding is a PITA to change.

I can't answer your questions but I'd love a bed with a slide. Wouldn't buy one for a young toddler though. Would wait til it was certain that the kid wouldn't fall out of a high bed.

Ds is still co sleeping ( co sleeper cot) but I'm keen to kick him out in the near future. He'll be 2 in a few weeks. I like the look of a loft bed with a slide (they look like so much fun!) and I was just wondering what others experiences of it were- are loft beds a pain to change bedding on? And would it be silly to get a bed that encourages play rather than sleep?? Also he somersaults in his sleep at the moment. Would it make more sense to have a bed lower to the ground??
