Hi Mummono, I see this is an old thread but felt I had to say that I totally agree with your comments about st Columbas - my son has been there for 7 years and the best thing about his experience is the close friends he has made there and the end of the school day. There is an appalling environment of teachers children being given all but a few rewards etc. the teachers are unapproachable for the boys, they shout and threaten on a daily basis and detentions are handed out like sweets, there is a dreadful lack of compassion for the boys and very poor support. I would love to move my son but his convinced himself that he would struggle in a new school. I have many sleepless nights with worry for my boy and frequently feel really angry at the treatment he receives there. The language department is shocking but there is no place to complain as teacher is Heads wife! And as for the quality of maths teaching - let's just say 70% of my sons group is paying for private tuition after school!

I don't know anything about St Columbas, but there are some fanastic state schools in St Albans. Beaumont and Verulum both have an excellent repruation.

I think you would be better keeping the 100K to pay for university fees or a desposit for a house.

Hi all,

This is my first ever post on Mumsnet so really sorry if I get the etiquette wrong, my query is driven around whether St. Columbas is the right school for eldest DS: I moved him there in year 5, he is now in year 6 to make a easier move for him to senior school however I have become concerned that they don't either push the the boys academically and the pastoral care is more 'marketing speak' than evidenced. They don't seem to know children as individuals beyond the favoured few who are all children of teachers. I wonder if for 11 plus if you want academics it would be better to send my DS to St. Albans boys if I want pastoral care I should go for Beaumont or Verulum and save the 100kplus of school fees as a deposit on a house for him. I work full time in order to beanie to pay the school fees as fell its a school that rewards the'volunteer mum' and those who work the system.

Thoughts in general about St Columbas.peae,
