The National Trust offer family working holidays at some of their centres. We went on one to Wales at Easter and really enjoyed it. We did beach cleaning and woodland clearance as well as kayaking and campfires. Another option is sponsoring a child through a charity such as Plan. Your children can write to the sponsored child and learn about how children in different parts of the world live.
Thanks, there is a volunteer organisation & I looked at their website but no no mention of children at all put me off. I guess I could just ring and ask them I will contact the Wildlife Trust too, sounds like the kind of thing that could be good!
Wildlife Trust will be glad to have you. They also have wildlife watch monthly meetings which are free for kids (but parent/carer expected to be in tow) - making & putting up bird/bat boxes, litter pick, pond dipping, butterfly count etc.
We'd like to do some kind of volunteering together as a family. Partly it's because volunteering could help the dcs develop their sense of responsibility to others & partly because we'd like to feel more connected to a community which volunteering locally or as a part of a group would hopefully help with. The dcs are 4 and 6. We've done things like collected litter on the beach as a family and have clear outs for the charity shop a couple of times a year. I used to do some conservation volunteering but not sure where to find out about that now and wonder if the dcs would be too young - the couple of websites I have looked at stipulate 18+. If anyone has any ideas that would be grand. thanks ;)
